THQNordic has failed me with their first announcement. 2 more to go...

Well Google is also planning a reveal all tomorrow. With a Stadia Connect video revealing prices, launch dates and so on.

Next Batch of consoles..... Or well the rumors.

PS5 - 8 Cores Zen 2 - RAM - 16+ GB -  GPU - 9.2 Tflops somehow equal to 14.x Tflops on GCN? FEB 2020 reveal?

XB4 - 8 Cores Zen 2 - RAM - 16+ GB - GPU - 8 Tflops? Equal to some other number like 13 on GCN? JUNE 2020

Switch 2/ Switch Go? - Even more Portable Switch. Rumor of a better SoC that is cooler and faster maybe more powerful. Extra Mario Mushrooms.

Known insider Shinobi062 is teasing... well, I'll let you work out this extremely subtle hint:

Has he ever said anything about Doomguy being in Smash? I've heard the rumors, and if they're true, we're in for a hell of a time. ;)

Baldur's Gate 3 is real and being developed by Larian Studios, the studio behind Divinity: Original Sin

Part of me is dumbfounded that we're actually getting a Baldur's Gate 3, after all this time and three canceled projects later. The other part of me is already tempering my expectations. It's not the original team (goes without saying), no Infinity Engine (odds of that happening are astronomical), 5E ruleset, likely that no characters from the original series show up unless The Sundering plays with some things, and likely a new battle system that isn't Real-time w/ Pause. Co-op is a good thing though.

So... probably not really Baldur's Gate 3 then. :P Probably just a random new D&D 5e (ugh) game using the Baldur's Gate name for nostalgia bux. Yeah, I know Baldur's Gate is a city in the forgotten realms, but no one buys a game called "Baldur's Gate" because they're such a big fan of that fictional city, lol.

I think Larian are great - I love Divinity: Original Sin - but I can't help being pessimistic about the idea that anyone could revive the true spirit of the BG series. Closest new game I've played to the feel of the original engine is Pathfinder: Kingmaker, by Owlcat. But I'm not sure either Owlcat or Larian has the writing chops to come up with a good enough story. Still, I'm glad it's Larian and not Beamdog.

As for old characters showing up, they might bring back Minsc through some gimmick or other, since he's shown up in some recent comics and games.

Yeah I'm not holding my breath that it's going to have the same "spirit" as the original games. Probably unlikely that it will involve anything Bhaalspawn related, which is what really defined the original series. Also, I'm not positive but I think Chris Avellone may have a hand in writing BG3 which would be one very good redeeming thing.

As for Minsc, that's kind of what I was referring to. I know there was some kind of cataclysmic event that had happened with The Sundering, and I had seen him pop up in some things even though I believe we're almost 100 years after the events of BG 1&2 at this point. Then again I have no idea what the timeline for anything recent looks like so I'm really grasping at air here.

I can't keep up with all the E3 all over the place, and it's not even E3 yet.

The new Darksiders game is a Diablo-like top down loot thing:

Google Stadia is 'coming out', or going live, I suppose, in November this year, starting with a $10 a month paid subscription that gives you up to 4K streaming and access to some kind of Xbox Game Pass style of library of 'free' games (you still have to buy new games, though). There'll also be a free subscription coming in 2020, limited to 1080p with no 'free' games. And there's a 'Founder's Edition' pack with a controller, a Chromecast and a few months of subscription for $130.

This looks like a cool game:

It's looking like The Witcher 3 is almost definitely coming to Switch.

Destiny 2 is going free-to-play on September 17th, including what seems like all the currently available stuff (but still with paid expansions in future). The PC version is leaving Battle.net and going to Steam, and there'll be cross-play across all platforms (PC, XB1, PS4 and Stadia).

OK people, we're going back to the world of non-E3 video game news with a banger: Chinese game accessory manufacturer HonSon has started listing accessories for a 'Switch Mini'. The same Switch Mini that hasn't been officially revealed yet. Potentially, this Switch Mini:

switchmini.900x.jpg

This could be it, baby. It looks like pretty much exactly what I wanted, with integrated JoyCons, smaller size, still compatible with a Dock and even a d-pad for good measure. Hopefully we'll have the official reveal soon, because I need to have one of those in time for Astral Chain at the end of August.

The Switch Lite is officially unveiled:

Aaaaand they Nintendo'd it. It doesn't dock. You can't connect it to a TV. It's a Switch that doesn't switch. It took them exactly one revision to remove the best feature of the console.

Oh well, there's still another Switch revision to set my hopes on, though rumours of a 'Switch Pro' may have been greatly exaggerated. Right now it's looking like there's a minor internal upgrade coming to the original Switch model. Think something along the lines of the Xbox One to Xbox One S upgrade; just a slight change to more power-efficient internals, maybe more storage, nothing really significant to the end product of playing video games but it'll probably make it cheaper for Nintendo to manufacture. Hopefully that one isn't too far away, because I want a Switch but I still need it to dock.

Aaaand here it is:

Updated-Switch_07-17-19.jpg

Nintendo has announced a new revision of the Switch which seems basically identical to the original except that the battery life is now significantly better. Going from 2.5 - 6 hours of play time for the original to 4.5 - 9 hours with this new one. The official specs they've released say that the new model is still using the same 4310mAh battery as the original model, which means that extra battery life comes from more power efficient internals. Chances are that there won't be any significant performance upgrades with this new Switch, but, y'know, maybe.

It'll be out in September, presumably at the same time as the Switch Lite.

That new Switch revision is rolling out in stores around the world right now. I managed to get one on eBay yesterday, so I'll tell you bozos about it when it arrives. My old Switch that I sold last year was a Neon, so this time I went with the Grey one. Spoiler Alert: it's going to be the same old thing again just with better battery life :P

Anyway, get ready for some potential HOYPE, because gaming's greatest power couple are teaming up again for a big ol' video game conference thing at Gamescom in a day or so.

ECQKzc1UEAEmnSB.jpg

It's going to be happening in the middle of the night for me, and I don't interrupt my sleep schedule any more unless it's E3, but hopefully I'll wake up to some cool stuff.

Have we mentioned just how freaking good this game looks? Why the hell is no one paying attention to it out on the greater net? It's one of the bigger mysteries. Especially since it's launching on Steam.

And it's apparently 4K and 60FPS on an Xbox One X.

I think the lack of hype is just that they haven't shown any campaign footage since last E3. For the last year they've focused solely on the half dozen multiplayer modes they have and kept the good stuff under wraps until now, like three weeks out from release. I don't think it was the best decision, to be honest.

I'm still going to be playing it day one, though, thanks to Game Pass being the best deal in video games, accept no substitutes. You know what else you get with Game Pass? Only the UNDISPUTED GAME OF THE YEAR 2019... Devil May Cry 5. It's free on Game Pass right now. You can go and play it. It's the GOTY. Witness my beautiful boy:

c281ac0e6c8ad429dc2c9dd6f6d66668.gif

Also here's a new Watch Dogs Legion trailer:

Oh, and in "The gaming industry is going the way of the movie industry in terms of being consolidated into megacorporations" news, Sony now owns Insomniac Games. It's not exactly surprising, since Insomniac games are (or were at one point) mostly Sony exclusive anyway (Spyro, Ratchet & Clank, Resistance, Spider-Man), but now it's official.

Exactly. It was likely a mistake keeping the Campaign under wraps for so long. I've seen people openly concerned about why they were so withholding about giving it any detail until now.

Honestly, if they'd shown this campaign trailer at E3 vs. whatever that thing was they did show... It likely would've been one of the standout highlights of their conference.

Yeah, I guess you don't realise how much important marketing is until someone doesn't do it right. Gears 5 feels like a 2020 game because they just haven't done the usual hype cycle right :P

More Gamescom stuff

The Avengers gameplay we didn't get to see at E3:

I'm not impressed. Thor looks like GOW 2018 but worse, Hulk doesn't look anywhere near as fun as Incredible Hulk Ultimate Destruction, Cap had more going on in his PS3/360 licensed game, Iron Man looks like Anthem but... well, not worse, but not really better, either. Black Widow's combat looks and sounds low-impact, and her character model obscures the enemy you're fighting because the camera placement is wrong, which just seems like an amateur mistake.

I don't know, it doesn't look bad for a fun singleplayer game full of big dumb setpieces, but... it isn't one. It's a GaaS. You're supposed to endlessly farm the same missions over and over to make your progress bars go up and buy new colours for your fists or whatever. I don't know that this gameplay is going to hold up for a thousand hours of grinding.

Launch trailer for Remedy's Control:

Surprise announcement of the Yakuza 3, 4 and 5 PS4 remasters coming to the West. In fact, you can buy Yakuza 3 digitally right now, with 4 in October and 5 in February 2020, alongside a physical release of all three games. Looks like they're $20 each, or $60 for the full set:

Yakuza-Collection_08-20-19_Box.jpg

Also a full, 30+ minute live demo of Astral Chain out of Gamescom with the director Takahisa Taura:

btw Astral Chain just got a 37/40 in its Famitsu review this week. Incoming Runner Up GOTY 2019 (after DMC5, obviously). We might never get a real sequel to The Wonderful 101, but its influence is palpable here. Diplomacy has succeeded.

It's Nintendo Direct time! 40 minutes of HOT. NINTENDO. SWITCH. STUFF.

About 16 hours from this post, which is 6am tomorrow for me. Will this finally be the day they announce the Wonderful 101 Switch port, or will I be in here complaining that they didn't announce the Wonderful 101 Switch port? Find out tomorrow!

^I'm actually pretty hyped. It seems to be reviewing really well, with lots of reviews calling it the best Gears campaign yet, and it looks absolutely gorgeous. Big, dumb and loud is exactly what I want out of a Gears game.

OK, Nintendo Direct roundup:

- The Wonderful 101 port was not announced, #salt, but plenty of other ports were. Tokyo Mirage Sessions (which I really liked on Wii U, but probably wouldn't play again), Devil May Cry 2 (lol Capcom you maniacs, why?) and Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition (I never finished the original, but I got far enough in that I'm not really willing to start from the beginning again)

- Deadly Premonition is on Switch TODAY, and Deadly Premonition 2 is coming in 2020:

- Super Nintendo games are coming to Nintendo's online service from today onwards

- Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury is the fourth DLC character for Smash Ultimate

- There's a new Daemon X Machina demo coming tonight. It's the prologue of the full game, and your save file will carry over to the full game.
