#489247 SSLF's Runner-Up GOTY of the Year 2019 Thread

Literally the best thing about The Outer Worlds is the main menu music. If only the game lived up to it.

#489238 SSLF's Runner-Up GOTY of the Year 2019 Thread

The most I've ever felt like an old boomer was when I tried to git gud at Apex Legends. You die instantly in that game. You can spend half the match gathering the best items you possibly can, and then when you feel like you're finally ready to get in there, someone merely glances at you, and you fall over. And then you have to start all over again from scratch. Because apparently kids these days enjoy that.

It started to make me feel like my L33T g4m3r skills had faded, and I was just too old to game now... but then I tried Destiny 2 multiplayer again and completely kicked ass just like in the old days, so I'm gonna go ahead and blame Apex. :P

They really need to increase the health of all characters in that game by at least double, for it to be remotely playable.

But yeah sure, I didn't even play any of the other multiplayer game nominees, so give it the award, why not.

This is the first officially confirmed Playstation 5 game, by the way:

It's a 'looter/slasher', and I don't want to immediately poopoo but oh my goodness I couldn't be less interested.

I'm all for generic fantasy games where you loot and slash - I miss the days when a new one came out every week - but not if they're fantasy Destiny clones where every character just looks like a hulking pile of Korean free-to-play MMO armor. Pass. :\

#489225 SSLF's Runner-Up GOTY of the Year 2019 Thread

I'm pretty sure the only new game I played all year was The Outer Worlds, and I didn't even really like it. I bought Fallout 4 GOTY (which I thought was pretty lame when it first came out) on Black Friday afterward and found myself enjoying it a lot more than TOW. Pretty sad; I was hoping for more from Obsidian. But yeah, still less sad than the colossal mistake that was Fallout 76.

My 2019 GOTY goes to Spyro Reignited - even though it's technically a 2018 remake of a game series I played like 21 years ago (!!) - because I just got it this year and it was great.

Edit: Oh wait, I also played Apex Legends! It's alright I guess.

Bonus Star Wars Award: I picked up Republic Commando and both Forced Unleasheds this Thanksgiving and so far I'm enjoying Commando. The difficulty with some of the enemies can spike when you first encounter them, but it slowly gets easier. The Clone Commandos are cool characters who are only hamstrung by your bad choices, and I really wish that this game was still canon. Except for the more difficult enemies: they can stay in Legends.

Don't worry about canon, bro. None of my favorite Star Wars stuff is canon anymore (technically it never was, according to some) but it's still way better than the stuff that is canon now, in my humble opinion, so who cares. :P

If you're just getting into Star Wars games for the first time, I recommend Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2 and the Dark Forces series (especially Jedi Knight and Jedi Outcast - but not Jedi Academy, which sucks). Oh and X-Wing Alliance and Rogue Squadron if you're into flying games and don't mind them looking pretty dated. Those are my favs. I played nearly every Star Wars game that LucasArts released between about 1997 and 2004, so ask me anything, lol. Fell off the SW train after that though.

Game I'm excited to finally play: Halo: Reach.  I'm excited to see what Noble Team is all about.

Don't get your hopes up TOO much. It's not as good as the trilogy imo. But yeah I'm looking forward to replaying all of them too.

#489126 General LEGO Discussion

Posted by Saber-Scorpion on 26 November 2019 - 07:55 AM

My initial reaction: that sucks. As much as I love LEGO, I just don't trust corporations to not ruin things. I bet Bricklink will start slowly going downhill now as LEGO screws around with it, places restrictions on it, and eventually renames it to "LEGO Marketplace" or something equally bland, sealing its fate. And by then all the fans will have migrated to BrickOwl or elsewhere.

But maybe I'm wrong. I'm a very pessimistic person. :P

MY LATEST COMIC BOOK IS NOW AVAILABLE!

SHOP_cover01.jpg

The story of Wulfgard: Into the North continues!

The Wanderer must struggle to survive as he is hunted in the waking world by a werewolf and her pack, and hunted in his dreams by a mysterious woman with dark secrets. Meanwhile, in the Imperial capital city, the young elven thief Whisper finds herself in a den of assassins, sorcerers, and demons. Should she attempt to escape, or see her personal mission through to the end?

This 40-page sequel to my previous comic, Wulfgard: Into the North, continues the adventures of Stígander and Whisper in two additional chapters! This printed, perfect-bound paperback version of Chapters 5 & 6 also includes bonus art pages, and the art of every single frame of chapter 6 has been heavily improved from the webcomic version!

The Limited Edition version features alternate cover artwork by my sister, Maegan A. Stebbins (with colors & shading by me)! It shows Daemonique facing off with Maegan’s character, Kye, who appears prominently in chapter 6. Each Limited Edition is signed and numbered out of 25! Once they’re all sold, they’re gone for good! (But if you miss it, worry not: Maegan’s cover art is featured on one of the interior pages of both versions.)

Also available on Amazon! (standard edition only)

The "Revan" is based on the appearance of my KotOR protagonist when I first played the game, all those years ago. Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO later based Revan's "canon" face on the same one I chose, so it works, right? Not that I care about canon anyway. What they did with Revan in SW:TOR was really sad. Really wish we had gotten a KOTOR3 instead...

Anyway, enjoy!

#489057 Scorp's RPG Corner - now reaching The Outer Worlds

Posted by Saber-Scorpion on 03 November 2019 - 05:47 PM

I've been going in blind for my first playthrough. Refuse to read anything about the game or look anything up. Making decisions based on my gut and what seems like a good balance between doing what's right and getting fairly compensated. I was planning to play a Firefly-style outlaw with a heart of gold but "a powerful need to eat sometime this month." :P But so far I've ended up leaning a little bit toward appeasing the corporations in many of the conflicts. Or at least not openly rebelling against them. Wonder if the game will let me continue walking the line...

I've been having the same problem with the game being WAY too easy. I started the game in Supernova mode because I enjoyed the survival mode in Fallout New Vegas a lot... but I found the inability to save my game extremely frustrating, so I switched to Hard mode. And ever since then, the game has been an absolute BREEZE. And this is on a talky character with most points invested into Speech and Tech skills, barely any into guns. Occasionally a fight will be prolonged due to an HP bloated enemy or two, but it's not really hard, just slow.

Still, I've been enjoying the game so far... but it certainly hasn't blown me away. Straight off, I'm just not a fan of the setting and visual style. Don't get me wrong, Fallout combined with Firefly sounds like pure heaven to me, but I find the art style ugly and garish, and the writing is so comical it's hard to take anything seriously. I'm still waiting to run into a quest with some real OOMPH to it. One where crap really hits the fan, and something big explodes based on the decision you make. But I'm taking my sweet time, so maybe I just haven't gotten there yet.
