Alright, haven't really posted anything in a long time. Not because I haven't done anything, but because I've been really, really busy. And sick.

...

Right, so here's an environments piece for a project I'm working on in school. Expect more stuff later.

Oh, here's the (very) brief summary of what my project's about. Check it out if you're interested.

Medium: Comic
Fantasy/Whimsical
Premise:
My love for old myths and fairy tales are one of the reasons I undertook this project, which was something I’ve been wanting to do for some time. I also like the many modern interpretations of the stories, such as the various writings of Neil Gaiman, and Fables, by Bill Willingham, which mainly take place in a more ‘Urban Fantasy’ environment. As a fan of the more traditional Fantasy genre, this project places the characters in a setting much closer to home.
Setting/Enviroments:
Is a land of Fairy Tales and Myth, Legend and Magic. For years, the people of the Dark and Light nations lived in an uneasy peace. But then, King Charme, Leader of the Light Empire declared war on the Dark, and lead a massive invasion to their lands. And although both sides were evenly matched, the organized forces of the Light managed to easily beat the more chaotic and hectic Dark creatures.
The King’s forces continued their trail of conquest, which eventually leads them to the Deep Woods, home to the Witches, one of the most powerful groups of the Dark people. Though the Witches managed to put up a huge fight, the lack of organization, and the sheer number of enemy troops eventually wears them down, and now only a few Witches remain. One of them is Lillian Redwood, a young, and relatively inexperienced, Witch.
Though she survives the attack, Lillian is now left without a home and shelter. In a world populated by monsters and the forces of Light, she will have to use every trick she knows to survive.

The Deep Woods- An old and massive wood, and home of Witches, Wolves, Spiders, and other such creatures. Has a very Tolkien-ish feel towards it.
The High City- A massive circular city of the Antagonists, and nearly impenetrable by conventional tactics. Has a very ‘Home of Heroes’ look, being the place of Prince Charmings, Beautiful Princesses, and ‘gallant’ Knights.
The Blackened Path- The only way through rows of inaccessible mountains, which connects the homes of The Dark and Light creatures. The path is home to a number of vicious monsters, and in the past, even a powerful dragon, which was slain by the former Prince Charme the First.
Trollbridge- The troll city, shaped liked a massive bridge stretched over a river. Has a very slum feeling to it, and the buildings have a very messy and ‘used’ quality to them.
The Blackbriar Forest- The haunt of Faeries. Though similar to the Deep Woods, has a much more mystical and enchanting feel to it, and is much brighter.

Characters:
Factions
The Light Empire- Consisting of stereotype do-gooders, wise kings, charming princes, and holier-than-thou knights. They have a strict hierarchy and caste system, and have an extremely black-and-white mentality, viewing anyone not allied with them as the ‘enemy’ and ‘evil’.
The Dark realms- The complete opposite of The Empire, they have no real leaders. Unlike the Empire, which consists mainly of more humanoid races, the Dark realms are home to all sorts of creatures, like talking animals and monsters.
The Faeries- A mysterious an alien race, The Faeries were once a rare sight. However, nowadays, they seemed to be found in almost any forested area, and seem to be becoming much more ‘normal’. They have a somewhat alien worldview, seeing everything as some sort of game, but with bigger toys.
The Trolls- Formerly part of the Dark realms, the Trolls opted for neutrality, setting up their city on a river between the Light Empire and the Dark realms. Although excellent craftsmen and warriors, they are a very private people, rarely allowing non-trolls to cross their bridge. However, with the invasion, the Trolls now find themselves stuck between two warring factions.
Notable Figures
Lillian Redwood- The central character, and a young Witch. She is never seen without her red cloak. Though inexperienced, she has the ability to cast powerful spells, though has less control over them. Is quite hotheaded and often does things on an impulse.
Piper- The spirit of a powerful wizard, who was imprisoned in an amulet that Lillian holds, for his evil crimes. More or less serves as the guide and a sort of ‘mentor’, if an evil one.
Thomas- The last member of the group. A half-troll from Trollbridge, but exiled due to the crime of murder. Despite his brutish appearance, he’s actually quite smart, almost the ‘thinker’ of the group, though he is also a formidable fighter.
The Faerie Queen/Godmother- A powerful ally of the Empire. Like most of the Faeries, she views the whole invasion as a wonderful game. A powerful user of magic, she’s responsible for most of the Witches’ deaths. She really loves it when do good guys win, the good guys being anyone as pretty as her.
Humpty Dumpty- Now hatched, and quite insane. He’s also completely, fanatically loyal to the Queen, and thinks himself as a sort of second-in-command. The Queen herself however, simply views him as just another pet, though a useful one.
The King Charme- The leader of the Light Empire and main antagonist. Large, and clad in white armor with heroic proportions, which is somewhat ironic for his role. When he was still the Prince, he was the one who slew the dragon of The Blackened Path, and performed other stereotype heroic deeds. However, the first thing he did once he was crowned was to immediately declare open war on the Dark realms.
BabaYaga/Black Annis-

Expectations-

Ooooh, now THAT sounds interesting indeed. The forces of light driving out the darkness from the opposite point of view with greyed morality, I'll certainly be waiting to hear more about this.

Some sketches. Mostly more recent ones, as I thought my older ones were CRAAAAP.

Posted Image
Posted Image
Some sketches of Lillian. I'm still trying to 'get' her.

Posted Image
Posted Image
Some Piper sketches. Probably my favorite character to draw. He's changed A LOT from my old designs. Those things in his robes are the spirits of drowned rats.

Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Humpty Dumpty and his henchmen. My second favorite design after Piper. While I'm still working on the henchmen's look, I'm pretty satisfied with HD.

Posted Image
Posted Image
A Knight and King Charme. Still in early dev.

Posted Image
The Faerie Queen. Quite mad. By Faerie standards, anyway.

Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
The Faeries themselves. Quite a bit more exotic then the typical little person with wings.

Posted Image
Finally, some Trollz.

Criticsim is ery much welcome. This in my final project and I need everything as perfect as possible.

The Faeries look like Collectors from ME:2...

But all the drawings are very good, regardless.

I'm really digging the aesthetic. Lilian's get-up is very cool, but there's something... I dunno, off about her. Maybe it's the roughness of the sketch. But by far, my favourite designs are of the Piper and the Faerie Queen. Stylized, gothic, almost Burton-esque and very, very cool. I have nothing much else to say that relates to the actual design and skill of the drawings, unless nit-picking about the roughness of the premilinary sketches would count as constructive criticism.

Well, they ARE just roughs. But I totally get you about Lillian. Main characters are always hard.

I'm actually in a private school, though where I'm at could probably be the equal of Junior College.

(PS I'll try to post somemore stuff ASAP)

Very cool and funny little pieces of art, Richard! Reminds me a lot of the Overlord games with the "Villains" being the protagonists. Oh and Baba Yaga has always been interesting to me so if you are going to be making any pictures of her, I can't wait for 'em.

Really nice stylized fantasy stuff in here. Great job! I like the whimsical faerie theme, and the style fits it like a glove. I think I like the faerie queene best. Reminds me of my favorite creature in the Elder Scrolls, the Flame Atronach. The rest of the faeries are great also.

It's downright weird that I see this while trying to design my own faeries for Wulfgard. I will try extremely hard not to rip you off, I promise. :P

Oh, and atronaches are cool, but I always likes the look of the Daedroth. Maybe it's just me and my reptile fetish...

I don't think I've uploaded this one yet...

Some super-duper old art for the Baba Yaga and Black Annis. They've moved on a lot since then. (Black Annis is now Mab)

Oh yeah, and a project for my comic art class. Done completely in Photoshop, none of hat fancy shmancy Comic Maker stuff. It's rather embarrassingly crappy, but I guess I'll just throw it in...
