Seafaring orcs is quite unique I must say, never heard of anything like that before.

Looking great Nightstalker!

Awesome as always, Nightstalker!  The lighter weapons and armor make a lot of sense for a seafarer theme.  Glad you could figure out a plan for them.

Do you have a lore story behind those topknots, or a personal reason?  Your previous tribes seemed to allow a bit of variation in headgear/hair, but unless I'm seeing this wrong, it looks like every single one of the gray orcs have the same hairpiece.

Oh, and as of the time of this post, your 2nd to the last picture seems to be missing or not coding correctly.  Just FYI.

Yes there is a story, but I'll reveal that later, once everyone is done! Also, thanks for the heads up on the pic issue. I'll fix that as soon as possible.

I want to read some lore too. Do your Clans have names? Like Blackrock and Frostwolf? (Laughing Skull best clan :P) Can't wait to see the finished Horde!

Oh trust me, you'll get a lore update... when the army is complete! It'll be similar to the other two armies, which featured:

- Faction Emblem

- Land/Trade Breakdown

- History: 1E00-3E45

- Regular Units Breakdown

- Special Units Breakdown

- Unique Units Breakdown

And specific to this faction only!

- Clan Breakdown

And just as another update, I'm continuing with the tan/dark tan orcs right now. This week, all of the pieces will be in to just make the figures, which means I've got (you guessed it), another massive decal order to place real soon! Also, I'm beginning to stockpile LotR wargs for both mounted units. I really recommend against doing this, but the decision was made during pre-army creation sooo... yeah, I'm kinda going to feel the hurt from those purchases. More of a reason I don't recommend LotR stuff, but I can be a stubborn idiot.

So keep an eye out for that!

Ah, the price we pay for our creative vision.  I'm sure the quality of your work will make it all well worth it, though.  I'll certainly keep watching for the next update, and your eventual lore post.

Curses! I'll get lore out of you some day!

But I'm excited to see where we go with the army in the coming posts.

In the time frame of a month and a half, I've got another 30 orcs done.

Here are the tan/dark tan orcs.

Took inspiration from various metal armored orcs from Warhammer and Warhammer 40K. The decals being used are updated Dark Druid decals in orky format done Saber-Scorpion (I swear between decal orders and art commissions, I've worked this man to death). As usual, they are very amazing and I can't help but say thanks!

This just leaves the brown/medium dark flesh orcs left. Their bodies and parts have been assembled, and I am finalizing designs for each one. Once that is done, it'll be time for one final, massive decal order to finish up the regular troops. I've also been taking the time to buy up wargs for 20 special units. More on that later...

Oh, and just as a heads up, this army is going to be more delayed as I am super behind on my BrickFair VA 2019 build. Due to the sheer amount of time I've been spending on this faction, their entire army will not be on display this year. Roughly about 150-160 will be present though (150 regulars and 10 special units). That being said, I should hopefully have a BFVA2019 progress report sometime next week.

Until then, thanks for viewing!

- Nick

I can understand the delay, that's certainly a lot of pieces to work with.  They look spectacular, though!  Or, as your inspiration would probably say, "Dose look proper Orky, so they does!  WAAAAAAAGGHHH!!!"

Your use of the various helmets and masks really accentuated the look, these orcs definitely look ready for war.  I saw a lot more shields in this group, so with all the metal work, I take it this group is particularly disciplined, with plenty of resources and manufacturing skill?

At least half of each orc clan has shields. As for the metalwork, this clan is specifically known for piecing stuff together from various remains, hence the mixture of armor.

Sooo...

This project is being postponed till after BrickFair Virginia 2019.

I'm basically in crunch time for finishing my build and there is no possible way I can get the brown orcs finished in time for it. The display will still feature the orcs that are done, but it will probably be 120 (humans) vs. 130 (orcs).

Apologies to those who might have been holding their breath.

No objections here, though the explanation is appreciated.  I did miss your updates, though.  Will you be posting a thread to show what you're doing for Brickfair?  Watching your work there is always a highlight of my year.

I'll probably get something up once my next order gets in. As of now, I've got 2x4 48-stud baseplates ready for building.

Hello folks!

If someone is still alive out there, you'll be happy to know I didn't forget this topic! I've just been super indecisive on the last orc clan...

So until my indecisiveness ends... let's move onto...

Special Units

Before I start... let's talk about these guys/gals/things for a bit. Some necessary questions need to be answered before you go gathering pieces and what not (because you've already thought out the types of units you wanted prior to the building/gathering phase).

1) What is a special unit?

- Special units are the figures in your army that typically augment or reinforce something that your army does or doesn't do. It could be a group of veteran swordsman, archmages, or even something like hunters. These are your special forces; they may fall in line with the rest of your units or they may stand out to make themselves more unique! Generally speaking, I tend to make my special units things that the regular army lacks. For example, the orc army being made in this topic does not have standard cavalry units, so I made a set of cavalry units as a special units.

2) How many should you build?

- This is very dependent on the size of your army. For my typical army build, I'll go for a soft cap of 10 units. Because these minis fulfill a specific function, I'll go for less than my standard units. Usually, they'd tag along with the main units, or in smaller groups of their special unit (unless they're cavalry).

3) Uh, what pieces should I look for?

- If you go for lower numbers of special units, then I personally say go for stuff to make them stand out! They are special after all! In some way, shape, form, or fashion, someone should be able to relate a given unit to your faction. Apart from that, you pretty much have free reign to make them however you want to! If these are a group of veteran knights among your standard soldiers, you might get them better looking shields and swords, maybe a cloak and a unique face to help them stand out. You have limitless options! The only thing I'll say is try not to go too nuts with it. "Well hey Nick, you seem to do that with a lot of your special units!" Yeah, I know, that's because I can support it, but let's not talk about that. Remember, unique/hard to find pieces typically go for much more on Bricklink and the gray market. These guys just need to stand out from your regular units. They are in no way uniques (oh boy, can't wait to get to them).

4) Why can they be built however?

- Personally, I always back this question with a simple answer. Because of the lore. Yep! Here's where your faction's backstory can help out here! It can explain why these units stand out and why their equipment is much different.

5) Cool, so where do I start?

- Start back with your unit names and go from there. Keep in mind that if you don't have a clue as to what pieces you want, because there are a lot, you can always look up some art to give you some influence!

And that's it! But what does this all look like? Let me show you all!

Today, I'd like to introduce the Bara-Gol Orc Shamans!

48608845011_cc78a72f15_z.jpg

48608844986_cd24b8dc99_z.jpg

These guys made their first appearance at BFVA2019!

Compared to the rest of the units, these guys are magic users. Why? Back in the first era, the various tribes of the Bara-Gol orcs came into contact with troll shamans that dwelt among many of the islands in Altrairia. Rather than go to battle with the trolls, the orcs befriended them, initially for the sake of trade. However, as the two races grew closer, and times changed, they began to exchange various secrets and knowledge of the land. One such thing was Shamanism. While the orcs had heard of this, none of them were skilled in it. So the trolls took some of them in and taught them the way of the elements.

I'm paraphrasing, because the full story will be revealed later, but you get the idea. All pieces are TLG, minus the faces which are SSLF decals (THANKS SCORP!!!). Of course, with them being orcs, they still want to be in the thick of battle, so they strapped their totems on and grabbed some blunt objects to beat their opponents to a pulp as the support their forces with the elements.

As far as inspiration goes, you need look no further than World of Warcraft and their Enhancement Shamans!

And that's about it!

Short post I know, but this is really one of those sections where you can just go with whatever and have fun! If you have any questions just let me know! I'm always in for some good army buildin' chat!

Special units are always fun! This topic reminds me a lot of RTS games, Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-Earth II comes to mind, but the Rise of the Witch-King expansion sepcifically. With that expansion, they added 'hero' units to each faction that you could only have a very small number of (1-3). For Gondor it was the Knights of Dol Amorth, a heavy cavalry that used lances.

I've been thinking of doing some army building with my LEGO tanks or to make a cool little diorama with them.

I'm glad someone else thought of that game, Neyo!  The Knights of Dol Amroth were definitely my favorite, and hero units like them are a great analogy for Nightstalker's special criteria.  Following his advice for your army building should turn out excellently as a highlight for your well-built tanks.  Scorp's World War section should be a good source, methinks.

As for the orc shamans, I greatly enjoyed what lore you've revealed so far, Nightstalker, and I thought the totems were definitely a standout addition to your epic battle scene for Brickfair.  I'm guessing the different colors on the pieces imply usage of a different element for the shaman wearing them?
