Interesting! By the way, and I don't know if you've seen me post this question anywhere else, but are you still looking for planet and system names for Saber's Edge? Also, if you ever decide to pick up Warbringer again, would you be willing to host another contest to design the casino spaceship (unless you decide to not use that concept)? Last time, it seemed like only one or two people entered in that contest, and the designs weren't that elaborate. Now, the winner was Platypus, or Marimer I believe his username is now? But he hasn't been on since 2012. So I don't think it would really hurt his feelings if you tried to create another contest. I think I once told you this, but I wanted to enter in that contest back when it was running. I even drew some really fantastic designs that I was quite satisfied with, but due to the lack of a camera or scanner, I was unable to post the entries online. I wonder if I'll ever be able to find those drawings again. If not, I'd be willing to draw them again for another contest.

By the way: You've said previously that a large amount of the Nova Refuge Characters are also characters from Lego Wars you and your siblings had as kids.

How many of the quirky thinks about Minifigures transferred to Nova Refuge (I.e., Grimm's Laser Hook, Rick's eye disease, etc)?

How many of the quirky thinks about Minifigures transferred to Nova Refuge (I.e., Grimm's Laser Hook, Rick's eye disease, etc)?

Hah, yes, Grimm and Rick are the two characters who made the transition from LEGO's almost unchanged. They were both Ryan's characters. Rick was sort of his original hero character, an extremely rich hotshot pilot with a custom starship - the leader of Unitron. Grimm was a sort of gang leader who always fought with him. He had the hook from the Aquasharks line. Another character in the book, General Jake Black, had one of the Aquashark heads - the one with the beard - hence his beard in the book. I called his LEGO character "Darkshark" - I can't remember if I used that as his codename in the book at any point...

Douglas Boyle was this minifig: http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/Black_Bart I'm sure you've seen him in TTOM. He was also inspired a lot by Revolver Ocelot from MGS, of course, although I got his name "Boyle" from a throw-away adversary in an Armored Core game, for some reason... Roscoe was based on a LEGO head too, but I can't find where it originally came from. It had a mustache and a monocle, I think. He swindled his way into being "mayor" of our main LEGO city at one point, if I recall.

The Mahlok were vaguely inspired by the UFO aliens with the transparent orange skin, although the only one who was a character in our old LEGO games was a medic I had named "the limb zeller" (the aliens pronounced all s's as z's) because he sold robotic limbs to injured people. He made a cameo in TTOM. A lot of characters ended up as cyborgs when we played, due to injuries, which is why you get things like Grimm III in the book. All the Grimm clones were LEGO characters. All three of us had a few Grimm clones. My main one was III. Maegan's were VI and VII.

Most of my original LEGO heroes didn't make it into the book, actually. One reason is that a lot of them were Castle minifigs to start with, although I had this whole story about them being immortal so they could join the space sets. A few of them are in Wulfgard now, but the only one in Nova Refuge is probably Falcon, who was based on a minifig character I had called Amy. She started out as a warrior-princess who rode on a dragon, but she later became leader of the Exploriens, haha.

And I think that's about it! :P

She may or may not be in Wulfgard as well, and people may or may not be seeing her soon.

:ninja:

Anyway, I didn't have as many LEGO characters who made it into NR (other than the Grimm clones Scorp already mentioned) - most all of mine are in Wulfgard. :P Nick Wolfe is one of mine who's actually kind of in both settings, and I originally made him on an online server of the game Neverwinter Nights, but I made him into a minifig as well. He later joined Grimm's Army in our LEGO games, hence his NR character.

I noticed, on Xarkonian infantry armor, males have their symbol (X for infantry, red cross for medics, arrow for scouts) in a rectangle, while female have a triangle. Thats intentional?

Do the Achmer use any organically-based technology? Can you give any details on their societal norms and cuture, as well as their homeworld Planet O? We we don't know much about the Achmer yet... are they going to appear in Saber's Edge?

Well, yes, the male and female soldiers have different armor designs.

That's a big question. I like to leave the Achmer largely mysterious. There's not much I can tell you besides what's already out there. But yes, they will have a big role later in the story. They have some pretty dark secrets...

1. Would you mind telling us how to make poj-poj?

2. Are there any unique cuisines, dishes, maybe vegetables, eaten by the Human nations on Terra Nova which we did not have here on Earth?

3. Did scientists bring any DNA of larger animals from Earth to Terra Nova when they fled, so that they might recreate them in cloning experiments?

4. Have you seen Titan A.E.? Cool movie, right? I always loved the scene where they find all the DNA in the small glass containers.

5. How does Xarkon's legal system work? Are there trials for criminals? Are they tried by combat, kind of like it's done in Game of Thrones?

6. With Mars now effectively being the emperor of Xarkon, that would make Luke the Prince of Xarkon, right?

7. Does Terra Nova have tectonic plates, and are they the cause of mountains, volcanoes, and many other geographical features, like they are on Earth?

8. What are the core of Terra Nova made out of?

9. Do you need any help figuring out the absolute magnitude, mass or diameters of your stars, and recreating the old starmap? I'm studying astronomy at the moment, because I want to worldbuild for my own world, and I would love to offer some of my time on something like this. Do you like to have your astronomical stuff scientifically accurate? I don't mean brass tacks hard science, but stuff like habitable planets being in the habitable systems of a star.

10. Is Nova Refuge larger or smaller than the Milky Way? It seems to be smaller from the original starmaps, but I guess those can't be considered canon anymore.

11. Are there more or less pollution on Terra Nova than there was on Earth?

12. Are you still looking for new planet and system names for Saber's Edge and future stories?

13. What do you think is in store next for Nova Refuge? Are there any short stories that you are working on? I heard Wolfy had a short story she wanted to write sometime in the future. Do you know any details about that?

14. Do you know what Empress Kristal Skye looked like? Was she tall? What hair, eye or skin color did she have? Could you possibly create a picture of her some time? :)

15. What exact year did the Human scientists find out about the solar flares on the Sun? The team put together by TerraCom, lead by John Gaston, seems to have confirmed Dr. Arthur Randolph's predictions four years before the Sun exploded (at 4 BA), and the prologue of Warrior Born tells us that the scientists had found about the strange occurrences on the Sun 4 years prior to that. Does that place the original discovery at 8 BA? Also, was Arthur Randolph one of these original scientists, or did he only get into the picture afterwards? Also, was XARCOS and XARKON established before he went to Terra Nova? The book seems to indicate that, which means that he established the Xarkonian government after the outposts were already set up, correct? Also, was he effectively the first President of the original Xarkonian democracy, or do you think he might have been part of some kind of council, like congress or the senate in the U.S.?

16. Do you think Scandinavian countries made it to Terra Nova too? I'm from Denmark by the way. I could imagine some of them being in the Xarkonian Empire actually, which would make sense of the Norse Mythology vehicle naming conventions in the Armed Forces.

17. Did you see my question about the casino spaceship contest further up? :)

Holy smokes dude, that's a lot of questions! I had a rule in the OP to limit them to 6 per post... :P

1. Would you mind telling us how to make poj-poj?
It was a secret recipe passed down from Slashrim grandmother to Slashrim grandmother, until the Mahlok stole it and basically made it a nutritious but alcoholic swill that would keep the Slashrim healthy but docile. It's more of a scientific combination of chemicals now rather than a home brewed mixture.

2. Are there any unique cuisines, dishes, maybe vegetables, eaten by the Human nations on Terra Nova which we did not have here on Earth?
Yes, but I haven't named any. The Humans also brought some Earth plants with them though.

3. Did scientists bring any DNA of larger animals from Earth to Terra Nova when they fled, so that they might recreate them in cloning experiments?
Yes, and they also brought some live animals, like pets. Cats and dogs still exist on Terra Nova.

4. Have you seen Titan A.E.? Cool movie, right? I always loved the scene where they find all the DNA in the small glass containers.
Haven't seen it, sorry! I remember when it came out... Maybe I'll check it out sometime.

5. How does Xarkon's legal system work? Are there trials for criminals? Are they tried by combat, kind of like it's done in Game of Thrones?
Trial by combat, no. But duels, yes. It's legal in Xarkon for two parties to settle a dispute via a duel if both parties agree to it. But only if they both agree.

6. With Mars now effectively being the emperor of Xarkon, that would make Luke the Prince of Xarkon, right?
Mars doesn't actually declare himself Emperor at the end of the book. He just calls himself "Supreme Commander," taking over military dictatorship style until a rightful heir to the throne can be found. So technically no. But in some of the peoples' eyes... yes. Especially since, as it turns out, Raven has an even more royal demeanor than his father when he has to. This will come up if I ever finish the next book. :P

7. Does Terra Nova have tectonic plates, and are they the cause of mountains, volcanoes, and many other geographical features, like they are on Earth?
Of course.

8. What are the core of Terra Nova made out of?
Probably the same as Earth's core. The only geological difference I've established is that there are networks of energite crystal that run deep into the earth, and some scientists theorize that they are all actually connected somehow.

As I said in the OP of this thread, I'm not big into hammering out exact numbers for things in Nova Refuge. The trouble with establishing exact numbers while the story is still being written is that it limits you, and someone can come back later and nitpick the accuracy of the numbers and their relation to what happens in the story. Like, hey, there's no way this or that planet would be habitable because it's too small or too close to the sun, etc. So while I certainly wouldn't want to stop you from speculating - I'd enjoy reading what you come up with! - I can't guarantee I'll use it as canon. NR isn't exactly super "hard" sci-fi.

10. Is Nova Refuge larger or smaller than the Milky Way? It seems to be smaller from the original starmaps, but I guess those can't be considered canon anymore.

11. Are there more or less pollution on Terra Nova than there was on Earth?
Probably less thanks to technological advancement, although some poorer areas with less concern for a clean environment - like the Mordark Slums - are still quite polluted.

12. Are you still looking for new planet and system names for Saber's Edge and future stories?
Not right now.

13. What do you think is in store next for Nova Refuge? Are there any short stories that you are working on? I heard Wolfy had a short story she wanted to write sometime in the future. Do you know any details about that?
I think we both have at least one Nova Refuge story in the works, yes. I have a story about Vasha Greeshakk that is all but finished, so maybe I'll post that soon. Werewolf and I would like to collaborate on a story also.

14. Do you know what Empress Kristal Skye looked like? Was she tall? What hair, eye or skin color did she have? Could you possibly create a picture of her some time? :)
She had light blond hair and blue eyes, and was considered very beautiful by her people, although some might describe her features as "severe." That's all I've established in my head, anyway.

Okay, that's way too many questions in one. :P Honsetly, most of this stuff I haven't even established, because most of it isn't important for the stories I'm writing. If I ever go back and write a story set in that era of the NR universe, I'll get more specific about those details.

Though I can say this with certainty: I will never declare what year Nova Refuge takes place in, with regards to the real world. All that does is date a sci-fi story. NR takes place in "the future." ;)

16. Do you think Scandinavian countries made it to Terra Nova too? I'm from Denmark by the way. I could imagine some of them being in the Xarkonian Empire actually, which would make sense of the Norse Mythology vehicle naming conventions in the Armed Forces.
Of course - but there wasn't a 1:1 ratio of refugees from each country settling in one specific Terra Nova colony. Some colonists went to one place, some to another.

17. Did you see my question about the casino spaceship contest further up? :)
I don't know for sure if I would use the winning design from the contest in Warbringer - but I certainly wouldn't hold another contest with the same theme to replace it. That would feel dishonest. The other one won the contest fair and square - no matter how little competition there was - so if I use a contest winning design as a basis, it would be that one. ;)

I'm sorry Scorp, I forgot. It's been a bunch of pages since the OP you know. Anyway, I was thinking of writing some fan-made national anthems for nations on Terra Nova, that you can totally use if you like, but I was wondering, what kind of things do you think a national anthem of Xarkon would be about? The emperor/empress? Empress Skye? Legends of Norse Mythology? The Tenets of Honor, Bravery, Loyalty and Supremacy? And are there any kind of style, from real national anthems or songs, that you can think of that would suit Xarkon, either musically or lyrically? Or something else? I'm of nordic descend, being a Dane, so I was thinking that writing a song about Nordic myths wouldn't be too much of a hassle for me :)

Would you believe I started creating a Xarkon anthem aaaages ago? Of course I never got very far because I got tired of trying to learn the music software. :P But in my head it was a very Imperial March-ish military anthem, with chanting of "Honor, Brave'ry, Loyalty, Supremacy" in the background. A more lyrically diverse one would be interesting too though. :P

I tried to get my bro Ryan (who did some music for Wulfgard) to make some themes for the NR factions, but he never got around to it.

Nice! Actually I remember hearing a short NR tune by Ryan long ago, but I don't know where it is now. Maybe you could have a Xarkon anthem writing contest? I'd love to produce it for you afterwards.

EDIT: How does this music sound?

I think this kind of sound would suit Xakon perfectly. It is an original composition made by the channel's owner by the way. He's also on Vimeo I found out.

Now for some questions:

1. I was wondering, how does elections work in Victory? It is a representative democracy, right? So, like in some countries with a similar form of government, do votes for smaller regions and towns count more than the bigger ones?

2. Also, is there more than 1-2 political parties in Victory?

3. Can high-ranking people in the military be classified as politicians as well? Like Radcliff, being the Grand General, is he also a politican? Like, is he the Victorian equivalent of the Minister of Defense?

I have a question for you Scorp. By a luck I found that you also published the helmets for the two remaining Enomegs, Blood-Raven and Electric-Eel. The names of their armors are Harbinger and Interface, respectively. Can you give a description to them to finalize the "Enomeg Armor" thing at long last?  :)

I have a question about military communications in Nova Refuge.  Do human militaries still use the phonetic alphabet for letters (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, etc.) or some updated form of it?  It makes sense that even though comm. technology has moved on, the fact that English is still the dominant human language implies that the sounds of E, C, T, Z, etc. and other letters can still be mistaken for each other, especially in high stress situations.

If such codes were used in Warrior Born and I just forgot, I apologize in advance.

1A What exact weapons and/or armaments does the Silver Scepter have, and exactly how many of each?

2A Also, about how many people can it carry? I know you describe it as being able to carry a relatively large platoon of troops, and that the control room can hold about 12 people, but what about the ship in total? These details can be incorporated into the ship's new wiki article that I've written.

B What is Nick Wolf's preferred weapons? I know he has a handaxe and a rifle with an axe-shaped blazer-shielded bayonet, but are those his favorites? And what model is the gun? The handaxe, I assume, is just a regular axe without any blazer tech, right?
