Is it a bad thing if I can't tell the difference between digital and traditional? Your art style carries over very well across both platforms.

Since I can't seem to break my WH40k mini addiction, here's more pics!

Got a Captain of the Silver Paladins painted! I still need to get a pic of my Inceptors and Hellblasters as well. I'm currently up to 14 space marines for my homebrew chapter. The next unit will either be a lieutenant or a librarian, but that won't be until after the next batch of Heroforge figures get in.

Finished another 4 Intercessors!

I now have 1 Silver Paladin Intercessor Squad.

It'll probably be a bit before I get the next squad done. I still need to go back and grab a blue contrast paint. Well, that and I'm expecting the last DnD figure for my ongoing campaign to show up. I might talk about that more once the campaign finishes; by then, I should have the entire group as minis.

Space Marine for the Silver Paladin Chapter (OC Chapter). Going with a silver/gold theme. Got 13 more to go!

Beware: Bad Pictures!

14 Black Templar Primaris Intercessors - Bad quality picture, but I'm quite proud of them!

3 Dark Angel Primaris Intercessors - Painted for my brother. Doing green is much easier than having to deal with white. Seriously, you have to layer white to make it come out clean.

4 Hero Forge Minis from left to right: Ingrin Araro (DnD Paladin), Stormblade (OC from my own story), Ciara Halsen (DnD Rogue), Ace (Starbound OC)

I'll have to get close up pictures of them for more detail at some point.

But yeah...

That's what I've been super busy with. Painting and running a Homebrew DnD campaign (currently on session 18). Anyways, that's it for now!

C&C is always welcome and appreciated!!!

#488912 Nightstalker's Guide to Army Building

Posted by Nightstalker on 23 August 2019 - 03:31 PM

Hello folks!

If someone is still alive out there, you'll be happy to know I didn't forget this topic! I've just been super indecisive on the last orc clan...

So until my indecisiveness ends... let's move onto...

Special Units

Before I start... let's talk about these guys/gals/things for a bit. Some necessary questions need to be answered before you go gathering pieces and what not (because you've already thought out the types of units you wanted prior to the building/gathering phase).

1) What is a special unit?

- Special units are the figures in your army that typically augment or reinforce something that your army does or doesn't do. It could be a group of veteran swordsman, archmages, or even something like hunters. These are your special forces; they may fall in line with the rest of your units or they may stand out to make themselves more unique! Generally speaking, I tend to make my special units things that the regular army lacks. For example, the orc army being made in this topic does not have standard cavalry units, so I made a set of cavalry units as a special units.

2) How many should you build?

- This is very dependent on the size of your army. For my typical army build, I'll go for a soft cap of 10 units. Because these minis fulfill a specific function, I'll go for less than my standard units. Usually, they'd tag along with the main units, or in smaller groups of their special unit (unless they're cavalry).

3) Uh, what pieces should I look for?

- If you go for lower numbers of special units, then I personally say go for stuff to make them stand out! They are special after all! In some way, shape, form, or fashion, someone should be able to relate a given unit to your faction. Apart from that, you pretty much have free reign to make them however you want to! If these are a group of veteran knights among your standard soldiers, you might get them better looking shields and swords, maybe a cloak and a unique face to help them stand out. You have limitless options! The only thing I'll say is try not to go too nuts with it. "Well hey Nick, you seem to do that with a lot of your special units!" Yeah, I know, that's because I can support it, but let's not talk about that. Remember, unique/hard to find pieces typically go for much more on Bricklink and the gray market. These guys just need to stand out from your regular units. They are in no way uniques (oh boy, can't wait to get to them).

4) Why can they be built however?

- Personally, I always back this question with a simple answer. Because of the lore. Yep! Here's where your faction's backstory can help out here! It can explain why these units stand out and why their equipment is much different.

5) Cool, so where do I start?

- Start back with your unit names and go from there. Keep in mind that if you don't have a clue as to what pieces you want, because there are a lot, you can always look up some art to give you some influence!

And that's it! But what does this all look like? Let me show you all!

Today, I'd like to introduce the Bara-Gol Orc Shamans!

These guys made their first appearance at BFVA2019!

Compared to the rest of the units, these guys are magic users. Why? Back in the first era, the various tribes of the Bara-Gol orcs came into contact with troll shamans that dwelt among many of the islands in Altrairia. Rather than go to battle with the trolls, the orcs befriended them, initially for the sake of trade. However, as the two races grew closer, and times changed, they began to exchange various secrets and knowledge of the land. One such thing was Shamanism. While the orcs had heard of this, none of them were skilled in it. So the trolls took some of them in and taught them the way of the elements.

I'm paraphrasing, because the full story will be revealed later, but you get the idea. All pieces are TLG, minus the faces which are SSLF decals (THANKS SCORP!!!). Of course, with them being orcs, they still want to be in the thick of battle, so they strapped their totems on and grabbed some blunt objects to beat their opponents to a pulp as the support their forces with the elements.

As far as inspiration goes, you need look no further than World of Warcraft and their Enhancement Shamans!

And that's about it!

Short post I know, but this is really one of those sections where you can just go with whatever and have fun! If you have any questions just let me know! I'm always in for some good army buildin' chat!

This is definitely where gray market vendors would fill in certain gaps. As for going a purist route, this looks fine to me!

I rather like the added dirty features!

Sooo... I've recently found myself diving into collecting Warhammer 40k minis. Went ahead and painted up some Black Templar Primaris Marines. For a first time painting, I think they turned out half decent. I've got another quick snap figure I need to paint, and then I've got to assemble and paint another group of ten.

Liking these guys so far. They'll definitely help keep my room free of xenos filth...

#488906 What Are You Currently Playing?

Curse was way worse in DS1! Not only was it an Insta kill, but it also halfed your max hp until you found a way to uncurse yourself.

Glad to see you're tearing through the game! I'll admit, once you pick up on FromSoft's formula, the Souls games become much easier.

Keep it up!

Glad to see you picked up art again! I was rather fond of the commissions you drew for me a while ago!
