#483031 Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Maclunkey

To be fair, even afterward Guinness hated the franchise.

So much so he made a kid cry once. Seriously.

#482994 Mass Effect: Andromeda

I think it looks pretty neat. Doesn't really feel like Mass Effect to me, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing since it is only tangentially related to the original trilogy's plot. Gameplay looks fun and I haven't noticed many new sci-fi RPG's lately so it'll probably scratch that itch for me.

I do hope they give us the option to change Ryder's height, though, or that they at least fix his/her proportions.

Hey guys, I just started playing Pokémon Sun. My starter is a Rowlet whom I named 3wenty, because it's one more than 2wenty :P . This is the first one I've ever played, so I'm pretty excited!

Expect to hear more from Kimael (an inside joke with my irl friends) and her pet owl as she battles with fellow trainers like it's the law. Which it kind of is.

#482350 Tom CUH-LANCY's R6/GR/SC/whatever: Ubisoft Edition

Posted by Halcyon on 28 January 2017 - 11:10 PM

Hey-o, all.  Come here to discuss Tom Clancy games and whatnot, from the earliest SNES version of The Hunt for Red October to the as-of-yet unreleased Ghost Recon: Wildlands!  I myself still love (and enjoy) Rainbow Six 1-3, Splinter Cell up to Double Agent, and I liked Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 a lot as a middle schooler (although I find it rather clunky and annoying nowadays).

I've been playing Rainbow Six: Siege for a few months now and have been absolutely having a blast with it.  I rolled my eyes when it's earliest version, Rainbow Six: Patriots rolled around with its faux moral conundrums (we have to SHOOT THE COPS because they don't know who we are-type BS Battlefield 3 did) and white, stubbly faced protagonists and weird glorification of sacrificing innocents "for the greater good" and just general cringe-worthy self seriousness,  but then Siege rolled around with a completely different game.  Multiplayer only, no Campaign mode, and no story beyond a vague terrorist threat they use to explain the terrorist hunt mode?  Plus an honest-to-goodness sense of humor?  I'm down for that, and have been ever since I bought.  It's not without its problems, sure (matchmaking taking forever, on top of some latency issues) but that doesn't stop me from playing when I can.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands has me more than a little worried.  Beyond performance issues such as graphics downgrading and reports of screen-tearing (on the PS4 version, strangely enough), the gameplay seems rather repetitive and the shooting likes rather arcade-y.  Hee hee, Arkady.  Plus, it's Ubisoft.  On top of my worries that it won't take its topic of story very seriously (specifically, drug cartels, which given the way this issue has been portrayed in games thusfar does not instill me with confidence), it seems to lack the small touches of humor that makes Siege so much more enjoyable.  Still, the gameplay videos released so far don't seem too bad regarding this, and it has yet to be released (March 7 is the date given for its launch, bee-tee-dubs), so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt until then.

The character customization looks neat, though.

I'd like to play it just so I can wreck shop as a cowboy hat-wearing, eyepatched, lumberjack-bearded goofball. :P

I signed up for the closed Beta, I'll let y'all know if I get in.

#481822 What Are You Currently Playing?

Dude, YES. I really think the pixelated look of the textures in old 3D games adds significantly to the "dark and gritty" feel, in a way that no modern game has been able to capture. Even when they try to look gritty, modern graphics always appear slick and clean in comparison to those jagged ol' pixels with their stark contrasts. That's why I always tell people to play the original, original Metal Gear Solid if they can find it. Nothing else can capture that claustrophobic, oppressive feel of Shadow Moses Island quite like this:

I think the heavy shading plays a role, too; if they want, say, those barrels there to have shadows then they have to manually paint them on so they get to decide how it looks. But with modern games, they use dynamic lighting and since they can't control how it always looks it can really affect the tone of a game.

Also, just as an aside, even Kojima seems to prefer the original MGS,as that's what appears in flashbacks in MGS4.

Dragon Age: Origins love scenes are like something directed by David Lynch.

Especially the one between The Secret Party Member and Morrigan, if you convince him to for Morrigan's ritual.  It's the stuff of nightmares.

#480241 What Are You Currently Playing?

So I've been playing Dragon Age: Origins as part of my quest to build a save file for Dragon Age: Inquisition, and UGH this game.  Besides the bland setting, tepid writing and mushy gameplay, it just forces this whole "Gray Wardens ARE GOOD" and "Darkspawn ARE EVIL HORDE OF DARKNESS" narrative and it's just. So. Annoying.  Like, the Darkspawn are obviously just an orc-demon horde and that's all there is to it.  They are completely and utterly lacking in nuance, designed only to act as the outside threat that we have to unite everyone against (because, as we all know, nothing can get anyone to work together except having someone else they all agree to fight), and it is just so overbearingly basic.  But the way they game presents the Gray Wardens is even worse.  At least I don't have to think about Darkspawn; I see evil dudes, I kill.  They're like zombies, they're not even technically alive, according to the game.  But the Gray Wardens, who have the right to conscript recruits, regardless of nationality or economic status, force them into a ritual they don't reveal anything about, KILL anyone who tries to get out of it (and even then the ritual itself might kill you, if not immediately then in a couple decades since it drastically reduces your lifespan, among other pleasant side effects), and then it has the nerve to tell me that they're the good guys?!  I can't even criticize them in-game; I either idolize them or I'm a complete asshole who also smells bad.  It's things like this that drive me back to my catalogue of Black Isles/Obsidian games.  And this is all just the basic premise.  Never mind the story, characters, and other ill-conceived facets of this lazy, lukewarm mess.

And, according to fans, it only gets worse with DAII.

Also, could someone please tell Alistair to quit his whinging?  We've slain one of the last remaining dragons and broken out of Loghain's prison, I don't need to hear you tell me another story of Duncan only to break down sobbing.  AND WHY CAN I NEVER BRING UP WHAT HE DID TO SER JORY?!

/rant

It's not all bad, and there's enough there to keep me going for now (the Redcliffe and the Urn of Sacred Ashes quest I remember being a highlight of the game), but man when there's something bad, it's really bad.

#479858 The Movie News and John Wick Appreciation Thread

In the first movie, in my mind, it didn't really feel like fanservice so much as just being artsy (like how she is feminine, but is not female due to her lack of reproductive organs and the subsequent loss of sexual identity, etc.). But that's just my interp. But in SAC? Yeah, fanservice. Can't speak for the manga, as I haven't read it (but not for lack of trying...)

We better get to slug a journalist in the face for evil points. It's a deal breaker without it.

I used to be a zealot. About everything. I try my damnedest to be as reasonable as possible in everything now. :P

But I can be wholly unreasonable about a lot of things. Namely Firefly. Still a crazy about that ever since Vorgy introduced me to it.

And I agree, there really is no point, aside from them making money off the nostalgia. I still enjoy a decent remake or sequel, because it is new material in a property I already enjoy.

I'm stoked on both. I have the utmost faith in Favreau, and I think Mulan could be very well done. As long as they don't whitewash the cast.

They're doing a search for a Chinese actress to play Mulan, so I'm not worried.

I'm actually interested in this live-action Mulan. I think it'll probably turn out better than Lion King.
