While I agree on the most part, the offline co-op multiplayer should've been included on standard to begin with. And even moreso it's currently only prequel-era stuff, no way to play all the OT or Sequel content without jumping into online modes.

Also people are mad at Rocksteady. They teased Arkham Legacy's announcement *5* times now this year alone. And it just no-shows.

-Two separate Playstation State of Plays

All right let's knock 'em out. EDIT: and I'll probably add more silly awards as I come up with them.

 

Rotten Banana molded to look like an Award trophy to say it was a real legitimate game

-Anthem apparently wanted to feel like it was worth something, so went dumpster diving for even false validation.

 

Poopoo Stinkytown Award for Incredible Failure

-Pokemon Sword and Shield for not only gutting most of the series core gameplay features, but not even meeting the standard precedent for the remaining features.

 

Mr. Meh Mediocrely's Monotonous Award for Meh-ness

-RAGE 2 was fun in the moment, but I've no real desire to return to it. And can't really speak to anything I particularly liked or hated about it. It's just nothing.

 

Borderlands Award for Being more Borderlands

-Borderlands 3 because congratulations it's more Borderlands that basically does everything Borderlands 2 did but slightly better. And that's ok!

 

Best Fallout Award

-The Outer Worlds by default, and certainly wasn't gonna give that award to Fallout 76.

 

Best Game of the Year ruined by Activision's Microtransactions

-Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled was set to be a glorious remaster of a beloved original just like the Crash and Spyro trilogy sets, and definitely is, but Activision waited a month or two past released and then added ridiculous levels of monetization.

 

Best Remake by a large powergap that was free of Activision's talons

-Resident Evil 2 Remake is a stress-inducingly good time and that's all I've really got to say about it, since I'm still playing it.

 

Game of the Year if I had anything more than an utter potato of a PC to run it on

-Disco Elysium I played a bit of it to see if my computer could run it ok (it could not). I woke up, had a heated argument with a ceiling fan, critically failed a roll to retrieve the tie hanging on one the blades, suffered a heart attack, and subsequently died. Game End. 10/10.

 

Retroactive Game of the Year Consolation Prize

-The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, apparently 4th time in as many years attempting to get into it was indeed the charm.

 

Best Consolation Runner Up Award because I felt like giving it some recognition

-Life is Strange 2 has had a hard and bumpy road, from both people questioning its inherent worth as both a followup and as a game to begin with, but the uncompromising finale episode that just debuted last week solidified it as one of the best choice and consequence games of its type.

 

Capcom Award

-Capcom for consistently knocking it out of the park in a big way, continuing their meteoric comeback saga after languishing in the realm of deader than disco for the first half of the decade.

 

Game of the Year

-Doom Eternal *checks notes* wait, it got delayed 3 weeks from release all the way to March 2020? Welp, it's gonna have to go against Cyberpunk 2077 and Halo Infinite now.

 

The Actual Game of the Year Award for Game of the Year

-Devil May Cry 5 for being one of the best games I've played in a long time, and I don't even particularly like CAGs of its sort. I couldn't hack Vanquish, MGS Rising Revengeance of Boogaloo or Bayonetta, so I wasn't sure I'd be able to pull this off.
 

Bonus Star Wars Award

-Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order for completely subverting staggeringly low expectations to emerge as one of the better overall games to come out this year, and easily the best Star Wars game in over a decade and a half.

 

EDIT 1:

Dave Fennoy Memorial Award for Best Pub Crawl this side of Edgar Wright's The World's End

-Afterparty , the newest game from Night School Studio, featuring two dead college kids attempting to win a bet to escape hell, by drinking Satan under the table and partying their undead butts off.

Probably the most unexpected news of the day, Bethesda and Id Software held a social stream for Doom's 26th anniversary, and released a Megaton: The current OG Doom ports are being massively upgraded.

 

-Animation upgrades to fluid 60 FPS, aspect ration upgrades to support widescreen format

-Final Doom(The Plutonia Experiment and TNT Evilution) and the previously Xbox 360-exclusive Campaign "No Rest For the Living" are being added.

-MOD SUPPORT ON CONSOLE: A FO4/Skyrim style setup for players to retrieve and play fan-made levels and campaigns for the OG games, including John Romero's 25th anniversary campaign, "SIGIL".

 

I imagine these ports will also now be coming to PC, for the 0.5 people who don't already have a standard .exe of the OG Dooms and isn't modded to hell and back already. But, Doom 64 is coming out too, so, guess consistency helps!

 

This is good news any way you slice it.

I finished it. That wasn't just a really good game, that was some really good Star Wars too.

The characters are astonishingly well written, and they all get their big moments in the spotlight. Without saying too much, the villainous cast are also bright-shiners with an appropriately compelling backstory.

And particular shout-out to one late game addition to the crew, her contributions are short but sweet.

I really hope to see more of these characters in a hopeful sequel, assuming the Star Wars name is enough to break Respawn's curse of making really good games and having them sell poorly.

Exactly. It was likely a mistake keeping the Campaign under wraps for so long. I've seen people openly concerned about why they were so withholding about giving it any detail until now.

 

Honestly, if they'd shown this campaign trailer at E3 vs. whatever that thing was they did show... It likely would've been one of the standout highlights of their conference.

A running gag is Chief being froze/unconscious between games.

 

I have to respectfully disagree about Chief being a shallow character though. There's a lot of depth to him that just isn't readily apparent and takes a lot of repeat viewings of his showings to catch it. Small things like how he always checks his weapon when he's presented with uncomfortable situations, or the near unending level of internal trust in himself that he is one of the biggest badasses to ever exist (see: every time he does something ludicrously insane with an unfathomable amount of suicidal overconfidence). Unlike other straight silent protags like Gordon Freeman and insert other 2000s FPS protag, it actually feels like Chief is an active part of a conversation by virtue of his body language, which he has that in common with Doom Slayer from D16.

 

He is a dude that is 100% laser focused on the job at hand even when there's isn't really a clear cut job at hand. Even if it ultimately didn't do a good job of portraying it, I admire Halo 4 for attempting to explore how an actual character would be like with that kind of personality, and all the reality ensues bits that come with it.

 

Also I really love how much of a nerd Steve Downes is about his own character. I posted this vid way back in the wee days of last year around this time, before Ocy started playing the games, but I really like the discussion of the character presented:

Yeah Halo 5 on the whole is generally considered a massive disappointment for throwing a lot of things out the window. Strangely, gameplay isn't one of those things for most.

Locke and Osiris aren't very popular with the home crowd because they're percieved as an attempt to replace Chief as a primary character. Which I'm dombfounded even almost half a decade after this game came out, is *still* an argument. It's very much not the case as you can tell by the point you are in the game.

Personally I like H5's gameplay. I'm also of the opinion Osiris doesn't deserve the extreme level of hate they get.

Blue Team however...well to say they're nothing like their book counterparts is an understatement.

Wouldn't hold my breath on that. H5 is a lot less complicated of a story but uhhhhhh....

Not quite true... His armor has the bulkiness that the 4/5 iterations gave him over the slender build in 2 and 3. But ultimately yes, this Chief look is always the best look. And they even added the armor numbering from the anime and books.

Ok so let's get all this stuff in one place:

 

 

This has been confirmed as the opening cutscene to Infinite. We're on level playing ground now (mostly). I have no idea what's happened and what's going, but I can make an educated guess.

 

That's Zeta Halo (Installation 07) only last time it wasn't blown to hell. We know from Halo CE the only real way to blow up a ring is with a critical starship explosion, and my money is our dear UNSC Infinity from Halo 4 and 5 has gone the way of the Dodo at the hands of unseen forces. If that's the case, it's likely most if not all of the established expanded cast is gone now:

-Blue Team, chief's old Pre-Halo 1 gang (Fred, Linda, Kelly)

-Osiris (Locke, Vale, Tanaka)
-Alpha-Nine (Buck, Mickey, Dutch, Romeo, and Dare) "The ODSTeam"

-The Infinity Crew (Capt. Lasky, Dr. Halsey, Commander Jennifer Hale)

 

I have a safe bet The Arbiter is just fine. Cortana's situation is a hot potato, where Halo 5 left her is obviously being picked up judging from the trailer, but I feel as though she's not an all powerful megalomaniac that she wanted to be (and the she previously profusely denied being in Halo 2), and circumstances will ensure the Dynamic Duo are fighting together once again.

 

Other than that, I have no idea what's going on. But it's exciting!

 

EDIT: Here's more info.

 

Key things:

  • Joel Yarger, new Music Supervisor (music editor and mixer on titles like Uncharted 1/3, God of War 3, Spidey PS4, etc. and led that amazing 2016 E3 orchestra Sony had)
  • Curtis Schweitzer, the new lead Composer (credited as the composer of Starbound)

 

  • Dumped the old BLAM! Engine in favor of building slipspace for tools personalized for their use and to better take advantage of the X1X's inherent power and Scarlett. And it will also serve as an inhouse engine for XGS as a whole if they choose.
  • "Spiritual Reboot" In the sense that while this takes place in a world where Halo 5 happened, the finer details of that will not be necessary overall, and anything that will is sufficiently explained in the plot, as they are aiming Infinite to be a jumping on point for a new generation and for people who left a long time ago.
  • "You’re arriving in the middle a universe at war, with a sense of history underlying your entry into the world. But it will also feel fresh, full of potential, and new adventure. We will weave in context and guideposts to understand your place in a new universe. But if you’ve invested in Halo for all these years, you’ll feel immediately at home – and some of our story moments will spark a different resonance for your investment."
  • Lead for the Story is Paul Crocker (Batman Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. Not Arkham Knight) That should tell you what kind of narrative it's gonna be.
