Alright, I'd like to announce the winners!FIRST PLACE:
880_Zero, with his scene from Fuel
. Why it won:
Zero won this contest on the simple basis of structure. Rather than use the 8x8 base as the scene, he used it as a backdrop. The structure of his vig shifted the focus from the 8x8 restriction to the flying cars, (which were built very nicely). This was exactly the sort of thing I was hoping to see when I started the contest... not so much technical skill or correct representation as intuitive ways of making the vig feel like it's still part of the game. Having the focus on the cars from a racing game definitely threw a different spin on a situation where you'd think cars were too small to fit on an 8x8 base. Way to break barriers Zero! SECOND PLACE:
Grombrindal, with the expanded scene from Half Life 2
.Why it took second:
The vig was put together very nicely, with detailed environments and characters that were immediately identifiable. The rickety structure of the catwalks makes me want to fire up HL2 and smash them over again. The barrel was also a nice touch. Lots of items to familiarize with.
However, it never broke any boundaries. There were some spiffy camera angles, but it definitely didn't get any larger than the 8x8 base, which made it feel sort of linear and isolated. The top rail of that wooden fence was sticking out a bit. I'd have loved to see more of that, but it's pretty good looking as is! THIRD PLACE:
Anasazi, and his Half Life vig.Why it didn't take 2nd:
Anasazi's vig was still very much linear, but it had a flow to it. Like the action was still going. Heck, the trooper stuck in the process of gravity had motion to it. He also made a very nice bloodscape, which was an effect that pretty much everyone
used. However, he undoubtedly borrowed the gasmask concept from Grom, who already stole it from Crusty, who stole it from Dman... so while it's not a terrible sin, it really did take off the points, because we couldn't claim originality on it. However, the figs represented the characters very well, as did the Brickarms MP5s to the trooper's guns. So great job with that. Once again way too linear, but the cliff and the plateau with the soldier on top gave it the feeling that it flowed. So really what did you in was re-using the gas mask. Otherwise I might have called a tie for 2nd.
Thanks everyone for your entries! If you want my criticism of your vig, just comment on my profile, and I'll edit in some notes and suggestions, as well as reasons why it didn't tie for 3rd, etc.
