The manor is nice, but to anyone who has seen true noble homes, it's rather lackluster. The furnishings are pretty, but not the best. To a commoner, it looks like a slice of heaven - to a noble, it looks pathetic.

A few decorations adorn the walls here and there, mostly weapons of various types and a few tapestries that seem slightly inexpensive and not of particularly high quality. The place it well-maintained, however, despite its owner currently being away. Everything seems very clean and pleasant, and the many large windows in all the various rooms allow in a good amount of light. Candles and chandeliers otherwise provide illumination throughout the manor's many rooms and hallways. The decorations and colorations of the draperies and furniture mostly provide a warm, homely coloration - a sort of deep burgundy. However, to some, it may seem rather dismal and unpleasant.

The rooms in the manor are as follows...

  • The Kitchen (includes stairs down) - The kitchen is fairly small, but it has stairs down that lead to the cellar. Contains many different types of drinks and food supplies for cooking. Connected to the cellar via stairs and the meeting room via a doorway.
  • The Cellar - Small and rather dark, contains crates of food supplies and some raw meat that was apparently just recently put there for everyone currently staying, though no one has specially prepared or cooked it. Connected to the kitchen via stairs.
  • The Meeting Room (dining room) - The room in which everyone met (during the introduction in the Sign-Up Thread); fairly large, contains a big table that everyone can sit around. Connected to the kitchen, a hall that leads to the foyer, and a hall that leads to the sitting room.
  • The Foyer (includes stairs up) - The fairly large and open entrance area to the manor. Contains doors leading to the other rooms and/or hallways that connect them, including the meeting room and the sitting room, and stairs up. The foyer itself doesn't contain much, just decorations to make guests feel welcome.
  • Sitting Room - The largest room in the manor, full of chairs and with large windows. There is also a bar and a small chess table, along with a warm fireplace. Connected to the foyer, and the meeting room via a hallway.

UPSTAIRS is simply a few hallways leading to various bedrooms. There are four larger bedrooms that can accommodate multiple people and five smaller ones. Each is simply furnished, with a window, a bed (the larger rooms have two beds), a nightstand with a candle, and a chest at the foot of the bed.

- Prologue -

Many Meetings

((Please note that this prologue begins immediately after the meeting featured in the introduction of the sign-up topic is over, so if you didn't read it in detail, please familiarize yourself with it so that you can act accordingly.))

With Caiden's departure from the room, the meeting concluded. Everyone fell silent, some of them clearly unsure to react to just how many people had attended this little secretive discussion. The many inhabitants of the meeting area began to leave - save for Stevan and Daisy. Stevan stayed in the room, though he reached down for a pack at his feet, drawing out a large map and unrolling it on the table before him. Daisy scooted her box over by his side to peer at the map at the same time.

The others rather quickly dispersed. Plexaura and Ben left in the direction of the sitting room without saying a word to anyone. Plexaura went to stand before a window and stare out pensively, her arms crossed. Ben went to sit in a chair, looking at some small piece of parchment, though he still didn't remove his helm.

Drake just shrugged and began to wander, eventually finding his way to the foyer, where he paused to seemingly admire assorted weapons hanging from the walls. Kye, however, strode off into the kitchen, where he scratched around until he found a bottle of booze. Sniffing it, he then sank down in a corner to drink now that he was alone for the time being, staring into space.

---

Lastly, Jed and Forge also remained in a pair - and united to annoy someone. Their mark turned out to be Katrina Windborne, who was still in the meeting room when they approached her. Perhaps the gods hadn't favored her with luck this day.

The red-haired elf twins sauntered over to her with grins on their faces. "G'day, lass," said one - Katrina couldn't be sure which was which.

"Aye, good day," said the other. He nudged his twin and added, "Stop talking like a git."

"Takes one to know one, git," the second retorted under his breath before they returned their attention to her.

"I'm Forge."

"And I'm Jed. You stick out around here, don't have any big order logos blazoned on anything you're wearing," Jed added.

Not missing a beat, Forge finished for him, "How'd you end up in this dismal little bunch?"

---

After his departure from the meeting room and his brief breather against the closed doors, Caiden quickly straightened himself and headed upstairs. He was sure more than a few of the people present at the meeting would want to speak with him soon, but he couldn't - not right now.

From her place still hiding in the belt pouch, Percula couldn't help but notice an odd sense of urgency in Caiden's movements as he stepped into the bedroom he'd apparently designated as his own; it was one of the smaller ones, with only one bed. The subtlety of his mood, as usual, was something she figured was invisible to anyone who had seen him leave the meeting earlier.

Closing the door behind him, Caiden dug around in his pack - which he had left in the floor by his bed - until he found a small potion bottle, which he uncorked and downed so fast that Percula didn't even have time to speak before he gulped down all the contents in one huge swallow.

As he tucked the empty vial back into his bag, he briefly glanced at the pouch on his belt and asked simply, "Doing alright in there?"

((This is the prologue to the campaign Chasing Shadows. This prologue will give everyone a chance to interact with other players and with NPCs. Depending on your actions here, especially how you treat the NPCs around you, things later in the RP could considerably change - you could even alter which other two NPC companions - in addition to Caiden himself - join you on the rest of the campaign... and some trust levels as well, of course.

I'll be posting very frequently to update NPC reactions and other things, depending on what everyone does. For the sake of this prologue, please do not leave the manor. There's nothing particularly important outside in Redfield, all of you are staying in this manor for the night, and the campaign will open up to much larger and freer areas in the future. But, for now, stick to interacting with the environment you already have, and - more importantly - getting to know the various other characters.

By the way, don't be afraid at all to spam the topic with interactions! If someone isn't involved in a conversation, they shouldn't feel intimidated into the need to read it. Only read posts relevant to you; if two other players are having a conversation in a different room, don't feel like you have to read everything they're saying, unless you want to. I don't want anyone to feel overwhelmed by posts, but no one should feel that they have to wait for other people to post when they aren't involved with what they're doing, if you catch my drift.

For anyone wondering in more detail what the NPC companions look like, feel free to check their descriptions in the NPC companions topic.

That said, remember to keep OOC discussions, questions, etc., in this thread, and I'll also be updating the starting post in it with changes to the player characters (inventory, HP, etc.), as the campaign progresses. Have fun!))

As soon the Weeping Mage entered the meeting room, he was glad of two things:

One, that he had not worn his mask.

Two, that he had grown a beard and hair.

Of all the rotten luck two have, both Ben and Durante Blackburn were at the meeting. As if his mission couldn't get any harder, now two people that knew him by his mask and his face (his old face, granted) were there!

Charon's rage was quickly replaced by shock as he noticed that his childhood friend, Katrina, was there was well. What was more, she was with that Channeler, Durante!

After the meeting was over, Charon stayed where he was until Ben and Durante were gone. Then he moved towards the other cloaked and hooded person there: Matthaias Quill.

"So," the Weeping Mage said, his voice low "what brings you here to Redfield?"

---

Katrina was excited as the meeting was adjourned.

At last! She finally had some real information about Charon. Granted, it painted her friend in the worst possible light, but she finally had some leads to go on. Maybe Durante and his brother could help her find him...

It was then that she noticed that the two elf twins were making their way over to her. The cocky way that they handled themselves reminded her of another elf that she had met: some guy with wings who called himself Gar'eth or something like that.

 "G'day, lass."

"Aye, good day, stop talking like a git."

"Takes one to know one, git."

"I'm Forge."

"And I'm Jed. You stick out around here, don't have any big order logos blazoned on anything you're wearing."

"How'd you end up in this dismal little bunch?"

"I'm Katrina Windborne," Katrina said as she crossed her arms and looked at the two grinning elves "and I'm here looking for my friend, Charon Velos. That Channeler, Durante, says that he joined up with this Umbra Coven."

After Caiden concluded what Marcus could not help thinking of as a war-council, the Inquisitor frowned in thought, wondering what to do next.  His Venator friend was taking the lead on this operation, but seemed to want to be alone for now, a wish Marcus could understand and would definitely respect.

Still, this was the first he had heard of the “Umbra Coven,” and he wanted to know what kind of tactical options...or risks...he was looking at before charging into the fray.  The Templar Captain and Dwarven Venator were inspecting a map together and gave the impression that they knew what they were speaking about.  Capulet figured that would be a good place to start...and while he already knew that he admired dwarves, he had always wanted to befriend a Templar.

Approaching the two at the other end of the table, he cleared his throat and bowed his head respectfully before introducing himself.  “Sorry to interrupt.  Agent Marcus Capulet, at your service.”  Daisy was closer, so Marcus crouched slightly to be able to look her in the eyes, offering his hand to shake, before rising to do the same for Captain Stevan.  He hoped his protocols were correct, he had no idea how highborn this particular Templar was.

I’ve been traveling with Caiden for a while, but this is the first I’ve ever heard of this ‘Umbra Coven.’  Tactically speaking, are we looking at just a lot of cloak-and-dagger, or something much larger in scale?”

Percula had stayed comfortably hidden in Caid’s pouch pretty much all day so far, so when she noticed he’d gotten someplace private she pushed the lid of her container open and leaned out to get some fresh air, sighing. The pixie didn’t mind being kept hidden, since a few weeks - or was it a month? - of that had already gone by without terrible mishap, but typically she got a bit more air time between bouts of hiding than she’d been getting recently. Saffron was beginning to question why Caiden needed so many people to take on some cult thing. It’s just that Lysander creep and some of his creepy buddies… right? She thought, glancing up at her Venator friend.

The irony of her friendship with a monster hunter had yet to really sink in.

Especially as Percula was currently more focused on his mood, though she had a sinking suspicion as to why he was hurrying away from the others. ...Okay, several suspicions. She admitted to herself, watching Caiden dig around in his pack. It didn’t take too long for Saffron to realize what he was up to, and she opened her mouth to intervene… but he downed a potion faster than she could get a word out, leaving her speechless for a few moments afterward. It seemed Caid’s addiction was only getting worse.

As he tucked the empty vial back into his bag, he briefly glanced at her and asked simply, "Doing alright in there?"

“Uh… yeah.” The pixie managed. “But… we really need to talk about your potion addiction.” She sighed, leaning out a bit more. “Sooner than later, okay?” Percula added, putting on her best authoritarian tone… despite being many, many times smaller than her comparatively enormous lover.

-----

Rosette took a deep breath of fresh, crisp air as she clung to one of her latest animal friends. Time and time again on her lengthy journey she’d found reason to befriend (or at least recruit) various creatures to give her a much-needed boost. Considering the time-sensitive nature of her little mission, it only made sense… even if it was starting to hurt her with how many beings she was taking out of their way to help her own rather selfish desires.

She tried to assure herself that pursuing her sister wasn’t as selfish as she oftentimes felt, though, all things considered. That, and technically she was benefiting the hawk she had taken for a ride, helping it spot food in a new environment as they hovered on a thermal high above Redfield. Rosette had been trying to figure out just what to do at this point, knowing her sister was down there… but not having the slightest clue how to get to her without getting found by one of the humans.

Or one of the… other things in the party.

Having trailed after them for so long, and using the spirits of the environment to guide her, Rosette had found out - much to her mounting anxiety - a werewolf and some kind of… half-demon had managed to blend into the group. There’d been some suggestion from a few spirits that several members knew about their natures, like how some had discovered Percula (or, if the accounts were to be believed, that she had let herself get discovered). This, overall, failed to put Rosette at ease, though, which made her want to simply drop down there even more and figure out just what was really going on.

While up till this point a number of crippling worries and fears had held her back, Rosette realized she really just needed to get this over with. Taking a deep breath, she gave her ride a gentle, thankful stroke before the pixie pushed herself off the bird’s back, extending her wings to catch the wind and hang there in the air for a few moments. It really was amazing how small everything seemed from up here, and the diminutive pixie took her time descending for more reasons than just safety and stealth. Not that stealth seemed like a huge issue at the moment.

It took quite some time before Rosette alighted on the roof of the building, taking a moment to catch her breath and letting the cacophony of the human world wash over her. If she wasn’t trying to stay focused on her sister, she could’ve lost herself for days in this strange new world of a city… assuming, of course, she didn’t run into any ill-meaning humans. Of course, the same thing was true concerning her current objective: she was about to try sneaking into a large house full of possibly ill-meaning humans. As well as other creatures. She had spied a few elves wandering in…

But they had borne the trademark cloaks of monster hunters, and Rosette really had no desire to deal with anyone like that until she was sure of why they did what they did. She had learned all too early that some were just thirsty for blood, regardless of its source…

The pixie struggled to push that thought out of her mind, considering how many Venatori currently surrounded her sister. Now was really, really not the time to think about how murderous their members could be. Taking a deep breath, Rosette tried peeking through her spiritual ‘third eye’ to figure out where everyone was in the building, though with her long hover down she was too exhausted to hold it for long. She managed to get a ping on one of the isolated members of the group, though.

Who, of course, was apparently tainted with the blood of demons.

But for now he was the only one who was vaguely approachable, and he was apparently more anxious than vicious. At least, as far as the spirits she had asked knew. There was the demonic heritage to consider… though now that the pixie considered it, she was rather intrigued how he managed to at least appear so innocent. With that in mind, Rosette began to hurry over toward that part of the house, wondering if there were any conveniently open windows or mouse holes to get inside. As it turned out, there was a window she could slip in through, and it was even more conveniently behind the lonely demon-kin.

Darting inside, Rosette immediately aimed for the ceiling, landing on one of the rafters these human structures always seemed to have. A few careful hops interspersed with rest allowed her to get directly over the half-demon… and the drink he was taking liberal swigs from. She couldn’t help but wonder what it was, and she found herself leaning at a rather dangerous angle to get a look at the liquid in the bottle.

She only realized she’d fallen when she was already halfway down. Not even able to let out a panicked squeak, Rosette flailed briefly and ultimately without purpose before she landed right in Kye’s drink.

It has been so long since Sef had seen Stevan, she could have sworn him killed and disappeared long ago. That, or his other side had taken complete control and he was living out in the woods like a rabid animal. The Templar was not sure if that's how it worked, probably not, but it would have been a funny sight seeing Stevan go about on all fours. An inquisitor had already introduced himself to Rolf, but Sef figured it wouldn't hurt to say hello to an old friend.

[Northrim] "Randal! It's been too long!" roared Sef as she patted the captain's back (albeit a bit too hard). "Wait... your name's not Randal, it's Rolf. Don't know where I got that from. It feels like it has been a year since I've last spoken with you. Glad that we're fighting together once more."

"I'm Katrina Windborne," Katrina said as she crossed her arms and looked at the two grinning elves "and I'm here looking for my friend, Charon Velos. That Channeler, Durante, says that he joined up with this Umbra Coven."

Jed and Forge glanced at each other. They both shared some silent thought and frowned when they looked at her again.

"Oi, he's in the Coven?" asked one of them - she, again, couldn't be sure which one. She thought it was Forge, if she remembered right.

"Sounds pretty bad," added the one who she thought was Jed.

"Pretty cool name, though, eh? 'Charon Velos.'"

"Charon Velos," the other agreed in a theatrically deep, ominous voice. "Named after the bloody ferryman, 'e is. Maybe he was born to join the Coven. It was all a conspiracy by 'is parents, givin' him a name like that. Like when you meet werewolves with 'wolf' in their name. It's like - bloody 'ell, gods weren't nice to you."

After they shared a laugh about that, they both abruptly turned serious again, or at least as serious as they ever seemed to get. "Sorry 'bout that, though," said Forge. "Hope you can find 'im. What's the bloke look like? Maybe we've seen him around."

---

As Marcus introduced himself, Daisy and Stevan both gave nods, shaking his hand and introducing themselves as well - though Daisy looked decidedly amused when he stooped to offer her the courtesy.

"You're not interrupting, Agent Capulet," replied Stevan in a friendly tone.

"Aye, and I can respect a man who stoops to shake a lady-dwarf's hand," remarked Daisy in her heavily accented voice, grinning.

“I’ve been traveling with Caiden for a while, but this is the first I’ve ever heard of this ‘Umbra Coven.’  Tactically speaking, are we looking at just a lot of cloak-and-dagger, or something much larger in scale?”

Stevan and Daisy exchanged looks, but Sef approached soon after. Speaking in a Northrim tongue, she said, "Randal! It's been too long! Wait... your name's not Randal, it's Rolf. Don't know where I got that from. It feels like it has been a year since I've last spoken with you. Glad that we're fighting together once more."

Despite her very sturdy pat on the back, Stevan was sturdy as a stone wall, even if it slightly knocked the wind from his lungs. He turned to face her and answered, [Northrim] "I'm glad as well, Sef. It's always nice to see another warrior I know I can trust," he added a bit pointedly, giving a smile.

"They be speakin' in tongues," Daisy remarked jokingly, elbowing Marcus's leg a bit. But she turned to face him and replied to his previous question, "T' be honest with ye, Inquisitor, none of us can say fer sure. Right now we jus' like to think it's cloak 'n' dagger, but every time we turn around, there's more evidence the Coven could be somethin' bigger. It's prolly jus' a few agents scattered here 'n' there, but gods know they have a lot of influence, if nothin' else. That alone makes 'em dangerous. But I don't think they've got any armies - 'cept any undead ones they might be able to raise," she muttered disdainfully.

---

“Uh… yeah.” Percula managed. “But… we really need to talk about your potion addiction.” She sighed, leaning out a bit more. “Sooner than later, okay?” Percula added, putting on her best authoritarian tone… despite being many, many times smaller than her comparatively enormous lover.

Caiden looked remarkably chastised just at that comment, in spite of their size differences. He glanced away from her and hesitated for a second before answering, "It's not that simple. But - you're right. I guess we do."

He turned toward the door again, but he stopped to look down at her now that he'd tried to dismiss the all too apparent shame he felt - and now tried to change the subject and dodge that conversation, which was all too obvious to Percula. "I should probably mingle. After all, some of these people look to me like a leader." He didn't sound ecstatic about that. "You alright staying in there, or do you want to find some other place?"

---

Unfortunately for Rosette, Kye didn't seem particularly observant at this point in time, probably due to whatever reason or reasons he was sitting alone, drinking alcohol, and staring at the floor hard enough to burn a hole through it. The fact that she couldn't even get out a sound before she was in his drink didn't help things at all, either, and before the pixie knew it, Kye took another long swig of the ale, probably draining at least half of it in a few large gulps. Whatever was wrong with him, he was probably depressed as hell.

So, before she knew it, Rosette ended up nearly drowning in the demon-kin's mouth before he swallowed her along with his drink. He choked and sputtered in surprise at her presence, but she was already down his gullet before he coughed a few times and cleared his throat, looking in his drink in confusion.

For a second, he paused and wondered where things had gone wrong, but he chalked it up to his rotten luck and figured he'd just swallowed some kind of dead roach that had gotten into the drinks. Considering he'd swallowed far worse, he just breathed a sigh and took another swallow like nothing had happened, still lost in his own thoughts.

Dominica and Javed had been among the last to arrive to the meeting, and chose to stand off in an out of the way corner of the meeting room. They stayed there as the group dispersed, discussing quietly between themselves. "So," Javed began, "it would seem you're not the only one off enough in the head to believe in this shadowy coven, eh?" He chuckled a bit at the last part. Dominica had been gradually becoming more and more engrossed by the concept of the Umbra Coven's existence ever since she had stumbled across the first rumors several months ago. In her eyes several things they had encountered along their grand walkabout through Achaea had lent more credence to the Coven's existence, though Javed thought it mostly circumstantial, a mere paranoid diversion from the more obvious threats they had found. The fact that Venatori, Templars, and Inquisitors all agreed that was a very possible threat however, that had certainly lent more credence to the theory.

"Oh? If you consider this to be such a waste of your time, then you know that you're always free to leave," Dominica replied, an edge of sarcasm in her voice. She could tell by his attention falling upon the map and figures at the head of the table that he was only speaking in jest.

Javed turned back to her, an exaggerated mask of offense on his face, "and miss out on such a grand opportunity? You wound me to even consider that I would do such a thing."

Dominica smiled and shook her head, she was about to respond when she registered part of the conversation being had by the two fire-haired elves and an Achaean woman in chainmail armor.

"Named after the bloody ferryman, 'e is. Maybe he was born to join the Coven. It was all a conspiracy by 'is parents, givin' him a name like that. Like when you meet werewolves with 'wolf' in their name. It's like - bloody 'ell, gods weren't nice to you." The elves both had a good laugh at that. Dominica quietly suggested to Javed that he acquaint himself with the man whom had contacted them, Knight-Captain Rolf, not really registering that he was otherwise engaged with a few others of the motley band assembled. She walked over to the three she had overheard as one elf spoke again. "Sorry 'bout that, though. Hope you can find 'im. What's the bloke look like? Maybe we've seen him around."

"Yes of course, it is always better to have more eyes searching when you hope to find someone," Dominica interjected, "I wouldn't count too much on any theories of family connection to the Coven, however," she glanced over toward the elves, "if they are anything like what we suspect, then it is highly doubtful that the keepers of Hades have much to do with them."

-------

Javed, meanwhile, had moved on toward the Templar Captain and the gaggle of people surrounding him.

"It's prolly jus' a few agents scattered here 'n' there, but gods know they have a lot of influence, if nothin' else," Daisy said to the Inquisitor next to her while the Templar and a strikingly tall woman conversed in Northrim. "That alone makes 'em dangerous. But I don't think they've got any armies - 'cept any undead ones they might be able to raise."

"I certainly hope it doesn't come to that," Javed added. "I've not faced many undead, but the smell of them will linger long after they've been put down. Not to mention the other bits of unpleasantness their decay brings about."

Captain Adriana Dewitt sighed in relief as the meeting finally ended. She was rather eager to get away from the stuffy soldiers and glimmering golden knights and battle plans and relax a little.

She quickly shoved off from the table and made a beeline for the kitchen. She made a quick inspection of the room looking for something to drink before she noticed the sullen man nursing a bottle in the corner. There were few things sadder than someone drinking alone. So this was perfect for Dewitt, now she wouldn't be.

"Whatcha got there?" Dewitt asked, deftly swiping the bottle away from him before he could protest and taking a whiff of the contents. Ale, cheap stuff, maybe something a servant or cook kept for themselves? Whatever the case they could do better. She set the bottle down on the counter and smirked at the man. "C'mon, sulky, we're in a wealthy little manor here!" Adriana clapped her hands together eagerly. "Let's find the good stuff." Dewitt disappeared down the cellar, and after rummaging around for a few minutes returned with a fancy looking bottle of wine in one hand and a big fresh chunk of meat in the other. She hadn't realized how hungry she was until she had got down there.

Dewitt yanked out the cork with her teeth and took a long drink, savoring the flavor. "Now that tastes expensive," she remarked with a satisfied grin before passing the bottle to the man.

Then she set to scouring the kitchen for supplies, quickly lighting up the stove and setting the steak to cook on a pan.

"When you've been out at sea, you gotta take advantage of everything you can back on land," Dewitt leaned back on the counter, keeping an eye on the slowly cooking steak. "So why the long face? Not thrilled about the idea of hunting down mysterious maniacal magic men?" Adriana asked, waggling her fingers to emphasize the magic.

Caiden looked remarkably chastised just at Percula’s comment, in spite of their size differences. That made her feel both better and worse, especially as he glanced away from her and hesitated for a second before answering, "It's not that simple. But - you're right. I guess we do."

Saffron nodded. “Yeeaah, but… I keep forgetting.” She admitted. “So let’s just keep it in mind, at leeaast…?” She offered as an idea.

Caid turned toward the door again, but he stopped to look down at her now that he'd tried to dismiss the all too apparent shame he felt - and now tried to change the subject and dodge that conversation, which was all too obvious to Percula. "I should probably mingle. After all, some of these people look to me like a leader." He didn't sound ecstatic about that. "You alright staying in there, or do you want to find some other place?"

She snorted at his attempt to change the subject… but decided to let it go. This once. “Yeah, yeah,” Percula said, teasingly. “I’ll stay here in case your inspiring leadership isn’t enough.” The pixie smirked, slipping back into the pouch.

-----

Rosette managed a gasp as she slid right down the neck of the bottle, splashing into the surprisingly deep, somewhat clear liquid. At least, the pixie assumed it was clear, since not a whole lot of light went into the bottle and she didn’t think glowing would be the best idea. That would probably scare the demon-kin even worse than a pixie in his bottle. At any rate, she let out a premature sigh of relief as Kye seemed to have paused-

Everything tilted rather abruptly before she even finished, and Rosette scarcely had time to take a deep breath of air in the form of a gasp before she slipped right back down (well, technically up) the bottle’s neck and right into a far more… er… organic place. She had a brief moment to let what was happening sink in before, with an immense gulp, it happened.

She barely had time to comprehend what happened between then and the end of the trip, so it seemed like all of a sudden she was in a very dark, very wet, and very… well, surprisingly loud chamber. Rosette glowed as brightly as he could, bathing Kye’s insides in a yellow-green light that made the pixie’s own stomach churn. She paled at the sight, turning her glow off faster than it had come on, breathing hard and leaning up against one wall, struggling not to think too hard about what was going on.

Like how she was going to get back out of this mess.

Uh, uh, uh, uh… Her mind raced, before she remembered a particularly useful trick she’d been taught by an awfully suspicious-looking guy a ways back. Chewing her lip, Rosette made a face as she pressed her hand up against the side of Kye’s gut, swallowing hard as she touched his spirit through the physical contact. She’d never actually tried this before, but she knew the theory well enough that when she channeled a burst of pain, the pixie was fairly sure it would work.

Pretty sure.

“P-please let me out!” She decided to blurt out, too, for good measure.

Neitha really wasn't quite sure what to think about the whole situation. Wizards and magic and monsters were already way outside her experience —the fact that she'd had a, blessedly very brief, encounter with a werewolf once besides— and this 'Umbra Coven' was an idea so out there that apparently even the majority of people who dealt with such things regularly doubted its existence. Well, whether it existed or not didn't really matter to her —though the world would certainly be a nicer place if it turned out not to— she was here because Marcus had come, following Caiden. It was up to the others to find this mysterious book and learn its secrets; her job, as she saw it, was to protect her new boyfriend so he didn't get himself killed in the process... and maybe the others too, if she had time to spare.

When Marcus went over to talk with the dwarfess and one of the Templar, she decided to go find Kye —doubtless the demon-kin was far from comfortable with all the various magic- and monster- hunters hanging around. After a bit of searching, she found him in the kitchen, along with one of the new, to her, arrivals —this one, interestingly, neither Inquisitor, Templar, nor Venator.

"So why the long face? Not thrilled about the idea of hunting down mysterious maniacal magic men?"

"That's the thing you'll learn about Kye: despite that dangerous, roguish, exterior, inside he's really quite a softy" she said teasingly as she entered, taking a seat at the table opposite Kye. Getting herself a glass, she promptly snagged the wine bottle from the demon-kin's hands and poured herself some before returning it. She took a sip and discovered that it was quite good; Caiden's 'friend', whose manor this was, clearly had good taste.

"I'm Neitha" she said, introducing herself to the other woman. "I can't help but notice that you don't look like a hunter of the supernatural, unlike most of the people here. So, what brings you into... this?" she asked with an expansive gesture.

***

The mission had not even begun, and Sarael was already having trepidations. It reminded her too much of her previous mission... going out after a serious threat with so little information. No idea who they were, what they wanted, no definitive proof that they even existed... And this mission would not even be officially sanctioned! But... Stevan believed in it. As, apparently, did Ben and many other Templar, Inquisitors, and Venatori —all of them with far more experience than she. No, in her heart she could not believe that so many comrades in arms, some of whom she had fought beside, could all be wrong. And if they were right, then the mission was of the utmost importance, whatever her worries.

Well, at least this time they had a definite goal in mind —a concrete first step. Even if all the talk of secret codes had gone a bit over her head.

As everyone dispersed from the meeting, she sought out a familiar face, and so followed Ben and the female Inquisitor into the sitting room, taking a seat in a chair near his —a nice strong chair.

"Hi, Ben" she said cheerily, with one of her typical smiles —though both tone and smile perhaps a little more forced than the utter naturalness with which they had once come. "So, what have you been up to since... uh, since we last saw each other?" she asked. She couldn't even bring herself to say the phrase 'since the swamp', even such a little acknowledgement being too painful a reminded of the horrors she had witnessed mere months before.

Jed and Forge both made the same face at the same time. "It was just a joke, love," said Jed, offering a dorky grin. "We just meant, y'know, Charon, death, necromancy, Umbra Coven... all kinda similar, eh?"

"Not if you're a priestess of Hades," Forge said, glancing Dominica up and down. "I'm gonna assume that silver key 'round your neck is somethin' of Hades..."

"Ohhhh, that's why she's so touchy!" Jed laughed. "Sorry, Miss Death. Didn't mean to offend. Just a joke, y'know. Good thing we're elves, though. Play our cards right, we never see any o' those death gods."

"Didn't play 'em well becomin' monster hunters, Jed," Forge added, giving him a nudge. "Sorry 'bout him," he added, looking at Dominica again. "I'm Forge, he's Jed. Venatori."

"Pleasure," they finished at the same time, and both of them smiled and gave short bows.

---

"I certainly hope it doesn't come to that," Javed added to Daisy and Marcus's conversation. "I've not faced many undead, but the smell of them will linger long after they've been put down. Not to mention the other bits of unpleasantness their decay brings about."

Daisy just grunted. "The smell's the least o' yer concerns, you'll learn pretty fast. Try killin' one of 'em. Especially dependin' on the type..."

But she looked up at Javed and added, "You seem like a weird fella to be here. I'm Daisy, a Venator - one o' the Empire's monster hunters."

---

Saffron nodded. “Yeeaah, but… I keep forgetting.” She admitted. “So let’s just keep it in mind, at leeaast…?” She offered as an idea.

Caiden nodded. "Alright," he replied, but Percula was awfully suspicious she wasn't going to hear about this again for quite a while.

She snorted at his attempt to change the subject. “Yeah, yeah,” Percula said, teasingly. “I’ll stay here in case your inspiring leadership isn’t enough.” The pixie smirked, slipping back into the pouch.

The Venator gave a short laugh. "Thanks," he said as he stepped back out of his room and locked the door behind him again. The last thing he needed was someone poking around in his belongings while looking to claim a room for the night.

With that, he headed back downstairs and went through the meeting room, into the living area where Plexaura and Ben were still lingering about...

---

"Hi, Ben" Sarael said cheerily, with one of her typical smiles —though both tone and smile perhaps a little more forced than the utter naturalness with which they had once come. "So, what have you been up to since... uh, since we last saw each other?"

Ben didn't seem keen to get into specifics, either, as he shrugged and leaned back in his own rather sizable chair, his heavy suit of armor clinking when he moved and his voice slightly muffled by his helm, "The usual, I guess. Filling reports. I haven't actually had a lot of work lately, so I've been working on personal stuff." He held up the scrap of parchment. "Y'know, music interests. Haven't gotten far, though."

The Inquisitor stuffed the parchment into a pouch on his belt. He hesitated, but after a moment, he leaned a bit forward again and asked gently, trying not to make it too overbearing of a question but still concerned, "What about you? You doing alright?"

Meanwhile, Caiden strode into the room. From her hiding spot in the pouch on his belt, Percula couldn't help but feel like she was getting to experience a rare moment of lightheartedness when Caiden crept up behind his little sister and suddenly put his huge arms around her in a bear hug.

"Hey, Plex," said the Venator, a real smile on his face for once as he rested his chin on her head. "Been a long time."

"It has," Plexaura replied with a laugh, squirming, and Caiden grudgingly relinquished her from the hug. She turned around to face her big brother to give him a proper hug instead - her elbow brushing against the pouch Percula was in, but thankfully doing no harm. She tugged him over to a corner of the room, distancing them from Ben and Sarael a bit, before she lowered her voice. "I really need to talk to you, Caid."

"I know," Caiden replied as casually as he could; he wasn't very good at it. "I need to talk to you, too. But later. I'm 'mingling.'"

Plexaura laughed. "This isn't a social function. It's not like everyone in this building probably doesn't have a thousand secrets and things to whisper about."

"That's not supposed to be us. That's supposed to be the Umbra Coven," Caiden said a bit flatly.

The channeler snorted. "You know what I mean. Private affairs. Like potions?" she added as she pointedly arched a long, thin eyebrow.

"Please not right now," Caiden breathed in a mutter so low it was almost a growl.

---

Kye looked up when Dewitt entered the room and asked, "Whatcha got there?"

"Um - just a bottle of..."

She snatched it and sniffed the drink, setting it aside. Kye just sat there like he was frozen, his hand still in the position he'd left it when he had the bottle. "C'mon, sulky, we're in a wealthy little manor here!" Adriana clapped her hands together eagerly. "Let's find the good stuff."

And then she disappeared. Kye blinked, getting to his feet, rubbing the back of his neck with his right hand. While he waited, he could've sworn he felt something - moving... inside him.

His jaw went a little slack - until Dewitt reappeared, carrying a bottle and a chunk of meat. Whereas Kye had been hungry before, he found he'd suddenly lost his appetite.

"Now that tastes expensive," she remarked with a satisfied grin before passing him the bottle.

"Right - thanks," Kye blurted, taking it but not taking a swallow. Yes, something was definitely moving in his stomach, and he shifted his weight between his feet as he thought of how to escape from this weird woman and disappear somewhere discreet.

While Dewitt searched for supplies, she found more than she could've asked for - there were plenty of spices for cooking, and although they might've not been the finest she'd ever seen, depending on where she'd been before, they were much nicer than what she was used to out at sea. If she knew how to cook well, she could certainly make a delicious meal with all these supplies.

Kye opened his mouth to respond when Neitha came walking in. "That's the thing you'll learn about Kye: despite that dangerous, roguish, exterior, inside he's really quite a softy" she said teasingly as she entered, taking a seat at the table opposite Kye and fixing herself some wine.

He just mumbled something as he felt his face turn ever so slightly warm. But as Neitha turned to Dewitt for introductions and conversation, Kye was about to speak again and then promptly find some privacy to fix whatever issue he was having with his insides, he was very rudely interrupted - and, in fact, so was everyone else.

When Rosette put her hand against the wall of Kye's stomach and attempted to channel just a short burst of pain, something else happened. What resulted was a much larger shock of agony than she had wanted to inflict, and she certainly had no idea just what she did to him - but it was bad... especially given she'd just done it to a demon-kin of Pain, and an exceptional one at that.

Kye suddenly went rigid, his face contorted in a grimace and his mind on fire as he felt a jolt of agony run all through his very soul, and he let out a half-stifled yell in his throat through clenched teeth. His human disguise dropped that very instant, revealing every single one of his demonic features, and he crushed the wine bottle, shattering it, in his left gauntlet as it crunched into a steel fist. His muscles were all so taut they looked twice their size, and they were impressive enough ordinarily.

Neitha, the only person present who had seen all this before, still somehow felt like something was very wrong. It didn't just look like pain, it looked like something more...

"Ohgods..." he breathed as the pain faded as abruptly as it had come, his chest heaving to get his breath back. Yet, even after it disappeared, Neitha couldn't help but feel like the look on Kye's face implied he was trying to fight something, to push something out of his mind, as if resisting some unwanted influence. But it all lasted only a second, gone in a flash.

And then he realized he was standing there in front of a stranger, his demon blood on display. His tail jerked behind him as he glanced at Neitha, his violet eyes wide, and - before anyone could react - charged straight at Dewitt.

The demon tackled her straight to the floor, pinning her there underneath him and clapping his right hand over her mouth. "I'msorry, I'msorry - just - don't scream," he panted, his tail waving around frantically as he tightened his huge wings on his back and then looked at Neitha in desperation. "What am I supposed to do now!?" he hissed, clearly a wreck of emotions and panic. "There are Templars out there! Templars!"

And then, to top everything off, Rosette's tiny voice blurted, small and muffled - and Dewitt could hear it perfectly, given Kye was now on top of her and pinning her down, “P-please let me out!”

"Oh for Ahriman's sake," Kye whimpered, briefly closing his eyes and shaking his head before he took a few quick breaths - and returned to his human form. But, given the panic still written all over him, it was probably a very tenuous state.

"That's the thing you'll learn about Kye: despite that dangerous, roguish, exterior, inside he's really quite a softy" a woman said teasingly as she entered, taking a seat at the table opposite Kye. DeWitt smirked. He certainly didn't look like it, judging from that nasty metal gauntlet. Neither did this woman, a well-toned wild-haired southerner. Both of them looked like they could get in a fight with a fully armored knight and come up on top.

"I'm Neitha" she said, introducing herself to the other woman. "I can't help but notice that you don't look like a hunter of the supernatural, unlike most of the people here. So, what brings you into... this?" she asked with an expansive gesture.

"DeWitt. Captain Adriana DeWitt," she replied with a loose salute. "Well, I was a captain. I'm not completely sure if I hold onto the rank..." DeWitt trailed off. "Anyway, it's a long, thrilling tale of high seas adventure, daring heroics, and evil, demonic mages." DeWitt took a dramatic stance, a festival actor setting the stage for their play. "It all started when-"

She was suddenly interrupted by the shattering of glass. DeWitt looked over and saw Kye doubled over in pain, screaming through clenched teeth as his humanity seemed to melt away, giving way to fangs, horns, wings, and claws. Before she could even blink a demon was seating before her. His inhuman violet eyes suddenly fixed themselves on DeWitt. She could feel the hair on the back of her neck rise and her hand flinched for her sword, but she was far too slow. The demon rocketed across the table and pinned her to the ground, clamping her mouth shut.

Templars!"

DeWitt's eyes darted to the other woman, fear and betrayal in her eyes. Neitha knew? Who else knew? Didn't matter, DeWitt wasn't going to be at the mercy of a demon again. She had to get out.

Despite hyperventilating through the demon-kin's clasped hand, she heard a tiny voice call out from... inside him?

"P-please let me out!”

"Oh for Ahriman's sake," Kye whimpered, briefly closing his eyes and shaking his head before he took a few quick breaths - and returned to his human form.

Adriana's eyes were as wide as dinner plates. He had eaten someone? How was that possible, he didn't look like a demon of gluttony, but perhaps their demon-kin looked different. Didn't matter, no way in hell was she going to let herself get eaten. Wrestling an arm loose, DeWitt decided to answer the voice with a punch to Kye's stomach, while clamping her teeth down on his hand in a viscous bite, see how he liked it. She then tried to get her legs under her and kick off the demon. If she did, she could make a break for it.

Caiden nodded. "Alright," he replied, but Percula was awfully suspicious she wasn't going to hear about this again for quite a while. That earned the Venator look that reflected her suspicions.

The Venator gave a short laugh, though, as they moved on. "Thanks," he said as he stepped back out of his room and locked the door behind him again.

The pixie settled down and prepared for another long bout of rest and hiding. “Mmhm. You could use the help.” She smirked.

-----

As Caiden finally strode into a populated room Percula lived up to her name and perked up a bit, peering around at her surroundings… and noticing a surprisingly familiar figure as Caiden crept up behind his it and suddenly put his huge arms around said figure in a big bear hug.

"Hey, Plex," said the Venator, a real smile on his face for once as he rested his chin on her head. "Been a long time."

He rarely gives me those, the pixie thought, feeling jealous… until she recalled who Plex was. She was Caid’s sister.

"It has," Plexaura replied with a laugh, squirming, and Caiden grudgingly relinquished her from the hug. She turned around to face her big brother to give him a proper hug instead - her elbow brushing against the pouch Percula was in, but thankfully doing no harm. She tugged him over to a corner of the room, distancing them from the others a bit, before she lowered her voice. "I really need to talk to you, Caid."

"I know," Caiden replied as casually as he could; he wasn't very good at it. "I need to talk to you, too. But later. I'm 'mingling.'"

Percula snorted. A tad loudly, since she was… fifty percent sure Plexaura knew about her. Boy, that was… weeks and weeks ago. A month? Maybe...

Percula followed suit, still in hiding, though.

"Please not right now," Caiden breathed in a mutter so low it was almost a growl.

“Oooookay, if your sister’s bringing it up, too, we get to talk about it now.” Caid’s pouch decided. A moment passed before Percula managed to successfully squeeze her upper half out. After a moment, she realized Plex probably forgot about her, so the pixie offered her a tiny wave. “Heya, long time no see.” She added with a slight grin.

-----

Oh no.

Rosette winced as she felt the pain she conjured was far, far greater than the little jolt she meant to impart. She shuddered at the half-yell Kye managed, and flinched again at the sound of shattering glass.

"Oh gods..." he breathed as the pain finally faded. It hadn’t actually lasted long - Rosette trying to dispel the attack as soon as she saw its effects - but it had clearly done even more than the pixie worried. Something… felt wrong, though even with her hodgepodge training Rosette couldn’t put her finger on the problem in the demon’s soul. There just was one, briefly.

She decided it was the least of her worries as she felt the demon-kin charge abruptly, slamming into someone his size. "I'msorry, I'msorry - just - don't scream," he panted, seeming to be talking to who he tackled before addressing someone else. "What am I supposed to do now!?" he hissed, clearly a wreck of emotions and panic. "There are Templars out there! Templars!"

Realizing the demon-kin might not have realized where the pain came from, Rosette let out her call.

"Oh for Ahriman's sake," Was all Kye whimpered in reply, taking a few quick breaths… right before taking a fist to the stomach.

Rosette squeaked as the whole chamber was deformed by the blow, wincing and wishing she had never, ever gotten interested in some stupid bottled drink. “W-wait!” She called to… whoever was hitting her. Presumably the one Kye tackled, presumably because she shocked him… O-oh spirits! “T-this is my fault!”

Her mind was racing, now, as she desperately tried to repair the situation she had so inexplicably created. “I-I think we can sort it out! J-just… c-calm down?”

There was a commotion going on in the kitchen. As much as she wanted to stay and chat with Captain Rolf a bit more, curiosity got the better of her. The Templar popped a few kinks in her neck and bid her friend Stevan, and his companions, a quick farewell before investigating the noise. She marched through the manor towards the kitchen where she saw a most curious sight. There was a man, a very pointy man, on top of a woman. Sef raised her brow and stood beside the doorway for a moment, no one noticing her appearance. She was a Templar, a devil hunter, and though she technically has no business keeping the peace. But there was amoral duty she abide by.

Sef continued to listen and watch the scene unfold, ready to leap should things turn... fatal.

"DeWitt. Captain Adriana DeWitt. Well, I was a captain. I'm not completely sure if I hold onto the rank... Anyway, it's a long, thrilling tale of high seas adventure, daring heroics, and evil, demonic mages. It all started when-"

Neitha's attention was suddenly drawn away by the sound of shattering glass, turning to see Kye on full demonic display —wings, tail, horns, the whole bit. While she had seen this before, she was still frozen with surprise for a moment, though some part of her mind couldn't help but note something seemed unusually wrong. And then she remembered that they weren't alone —but not quite as fast as Kye, who promptly dove across the room to tackle Adriana to the floor.

"I'msorry, I'msorry - just - don't scream... What am I supposed to do now!? There are Templars out there! Templars!.... Oh for Ahriman's sake."

Kye's last comment left her a touch confused, as he seemed to be responding to no one, but there wasn't really time to worry about that, as the 'Captain' started to punch Kye and try to get free. Bounding out of her chair, she darted across the room and joined Kye, dogpiling onto the woman —trying to restrain her punching arm, and maybe one of her legs.

"Now, look, I know what you just saw was confusing and probably scary, but I can ex—" she started to say to Adriana, before a muffled voice originating from Kye's stomach made her stop mid-sentence.

“W-wait! T-this is my fault! I-I think we can sort it out! J-just… c-calm down?”

"Uh, Kye, why is your stomach talking?" she asked. Then, a possibility struck her: the tiny voice did sound female... "Percula, is that you!?" she growled at Kye's midsection. "Because I swear to Anubis if this is your fault I will... I will smack you with a flyswatter!" she hissed angrily. This would be just like that damn pixie —and, anyways, who else could it be? It's not like there were two of them...

"The usual, I guess. Filling reports. I haven't actually had a lot of work lately, so I've been working on personal stuff. Y'know, music interests. Haven't gotten far, though.... What about you? You doing alright?"

"Oh, yeah" she said reflexively. "Er, well... I haven't been sleeping too well" she added sheepishly after a couple moments. "But having something to do helps. I'll be fine!" she concluded with another slightly-forced smile —as if she was trying to convince herself of that, as much as she was Ben.

It was true —having something to do did help; the comforting routine of her basic duties was the only thing that had kept her going since that catastrophe. But... it wasn't enough; it did nothing to assuage her feelings of failure... it did nothing to stop the nightmares.

"You're not interrupting, Agent Capulet," replied Stevan in a friendly tone.

"Aye, and I can respect a man who stoops to shake a lady-dwarf's hand," remarked Daisy in her heavily accented voice, grinning.

Marcus returned the expression, happily responding, “Thank you, sir; and just being courteous, madam.”  With a proud tap of his breastplate, he beamed, ”Dwarven work has kept me alive for years in this business, a bit of respect is small recompense.”

A tall, powerful-looking woman interrupted and took Stevan’s attention, both of them conversing in a language Marcus did not understand.  Was that...Dwarvish?  Nordling?

"They be speakin' in tongues," Daisy remarked jokingly, elbowing Marcus's leg a bit.

Alright, so it most likely wasn’t Dwarvish.  Possibly a Northern dialect, then, especially given the physical properties Marcus could now notice in the two Templars.  Unless they were just very fit and he was reading too much into the situation again.

Daisy turned to face him and replied to his previous question, "T' be honest with ye, Inquisitor, none of us can say fer sure.

"I certainly hope it doesn't come to that," a sharply-dressed man added. "I've not faced many undead, but the smell of them will linger long after they've been put down. Not to mention the other bits of unpleasantness their decay brings about."

"The smell's the least o' yer concerns, you'll learn pretty fast. Try killin' one of 'em. Especially dependin' on the type..."

I’ve fought my fair share of them, myself.  Eventually you learn to ignore the smell, or let it give you more reason to chop them to bits and get the blaggards back in the ground, posthaste.”

But she looked up at Javed and added, "You seem like a weird fella to be here. I'm Daisy, a Venator - one o' the Empire's monster hunters."

Offering his hand for the stranger to shake, Marcus added, “And I’m Marcus Capulet, of the Imperial Inquisition.”

Turning his attention back to Daisy, Capulet mused aloud, “I’ve never liked facing mages with power.  Not the Condition, we’re all trained to deal with fireballs and lightning bolts and such, but influence.  Our strategists have always dreaded hunting a mage that might outrank anyone they send.  If they’re wrong, we’ve royally....or nobly, I suppose” he chuckled at his own quip, “peeved someone important.  If they’re right, well, that’s all the more resources the mage could throw at us, even without magical domination.  Just good old political power, with us on the wrong end.”

Shaking his head sadly, the Inquisitor sighed, “Well, thank you all the same, Daisy.  Knowing what we could be up against will certainly help.  My straightforward days of being told to ‘go there’ and ‘punch or stab that’ ended years ago.  Guess we’ll have to look carefully AND tread lightly on this hunt.”

Stroking his moustache pensively with his free thumb, Marcus then asked, “What else do we know for sure about this Coven?  Anything tying them together besides the usual ‘let’s take over the world’ nonsense?  I take it they’re not going to make it easy on us by putting on robes, holding hands, and chanting somewhere shadowy during their weekly staff meetings.”

((Doing a post for Katrina now. I'll do something with Charon once Darkwoods shows up))

"Oi, he's in the Coven?"

"Sounds pretty bad."

"Pretty cool name, though, eh? 'Charon Velos.'"

"Charon Velos, named after the bloody ferryman, 'e is. Maybe he was born to join the Coven. It was all a conspiracy by 'is parents, givin' him a name like that. Like when you meet werewolves with 'wolf' in their name. It's like - bloody 'ell, gods weren't nice to you."

"Sorry 'bout that, though, hope you can find 'im. What's the bloke look like? Maybe we've seen him around."

"Well, it was a long time since I saw him last," Katrina said as she dug out the charcoal drawing of her friend and showed it to the two elves "but according to what I've heard of him, this is how he dresses these days."

Just then, one of the others, a woman dressed in green, decided to join in the conversation:

"Yes of course, it is always better to have more eyes searching when you hope to find someone, I wouldn't count too much on any theories of family connection to the Coven, however,"she glanced over toward the elves, "if they are anything like what we suspect, then it is highly doubtful that the keepers of Hades have much to do with them."

"It was just a joke, love, We just meant, y'know, Charon, death, necromancy, Umbra Coven... all kinda similar, eh?"

"Not if you're a priestess of Hades, I'm gonna assume that silver key 'round your neck is somethin' of Hades..."

"Ohhhh, that's why she's so touchy! Sorry, Miss Death. Didn't mean to offend. Just a joke, y'know. Good thing we're elves, though. Play our cards right, we never see any o' those death gods."

"Didn't play 'em well becomin' monster hunters, Jed. Sorry 'bout him, I'm Forge, he's Jed. Venatori."

"Pleasure."

Katrina grinned at the sight of the Elven Twins being put down by the newcomer and extended her hand for the newcomer to shake.

"Katrina Windborne," she said "And I'm not part of any of these big factions that are here."

Turning back to the Twins, she added: "I wouldn't be two quick to judge, if I were you. According to the stories I heard, Charon helped those two Inquisitors Ben and Durante take down a Necromancer up North in Arrowfall, though apparently he can now use Demonic Magic."

While all the others was getting busy introducing themselves to each other Rutger was occupied with far more important things. Namely, making detailed notes on the information they had as of now. The fact that no other individual of the group seemed concerned with the very important business of well organised information briefly bothered Rutger, however he forwent his reservation to this fact as he realized it worked in his favor. After all, no one bothered him. This allowed him to swiftly finish up his his notes in an orderly fashion - though he was greatly peeved by how short those notes were - and soon enough he turned his attention to his would be companions instead.

They were, quite honestly, a ragtag bunch of what some would call misfits with the occasional proud knight mixed in. This didn't bother Rutger. Instead he smiled as he imagined all the things these people had experienced, all that knowledge just waiting to be recorded. Just waiting for a man like him.

It was all very exiting.

Neatly storing away his notes for now Rutger finally rose from his seat and made his way over to the first people who was in his immediate vicinity that looked interesting. This happened to be a pair of hooded fellows with that shady look that one expected of the unsavory types, Matthias Quill and Charon Velos. Rutger was about to start asking question of the two men when he realized that would be rude. He needed to introduce himself first.

"Excuse me, I'm Rutger Magnusson," he started, garbing the men's hands one after the other and shaking them vigorously. "This is all very exiting isn't it, a possible lead on this elusive Coven! Tell me, the two of you wouldn't happen to know anything about the Coven yourselves would you? It's just that we seem to know so awfully little, so any scrap would be of help no matter how small."

With one eye, Mathias quietly debated the ideal way of stealing everything in the room. The other eye had attention only for the shiny red apple in his gloved hand, positively gleaming from hours of polishing. He was, after all, a thief (albeit an extraordinary one), and thieves had a penchant for things of the shiny variety. Too much of a penchant, evidently – it had led to his involvement in this merry hunt.

Teeth cleaved the skin of the apple with a satisfying, squelching crunch, and the fruit proved to be every bit as delicious as it looked.

And when the other shifty-looking fellow in the room decided to make light conversation with him, Mathias showered the man in bits of that delicious apple as he replied.

“Y’know,” He mumbled around a full mouth, “Girlfriend turnsh outta be a vampire, triesh to kill me, get pointed in thish directshun. Ushual really.”

If Charon objected to being turned into a walking fruit salad, he was given little time to voice those complaints before a newcomer began to shake both his and Mathias’ hand with a ferocity the thief thought impossible.

"Excuse me, I'm Rutger Magnusson," The excited man introduced himself, "This is all very exiting isn't it, a possible lead on this elusive Coven! Tell me, the two of you wouldn't happen to know anything about the Coven yourselves would you? It's just that we seem to know so awfully little, so any scrap would be of help no matter how small."

Mathias made the diplomatic decision to swallow before answering this time.

“Can’t speak for tall dark and lonesome here, but I dunno much beyond they apparently like old, golden things and pushing folks through really painfully hard glass windows.”

Sparing a grin at Charon to show the description had no harsh intent, Mathias looked back to Rutger.

  “How ‘bout yourself then mate?”

One of the shady looking fellows, the one who was eating an apple, answered Rutger in a very polite manner after swallowing. Well, polite enough.

“Can’t speak for tall dark and lonesome here," the man said, "but I dunno much beyond they apparently like old, golden things and pushing folks through really painfully hard glass windows.”

"My, is that so? You'll have to tell me more sometime, sounds like quite the story."

Quickly sparing a grin at the other man, the apple eater turned back to Ruger. “How ‘bout yourself then mate?”

"Oh I was merely introduced to the threat of them by an acquaintance, Knight-Captain Stevan Rolf over there, nothing as exotic as what you described. Though I have noticed what might be tampering within the Templar archives it's not something that I've been able to directly tie to the coven yet. I am working on it however, though I doubt I'll find anything significant. By the way, you mentioned some 'old golden thing' that they were interested in, care to describe it?"
