BrickForge Closing

31 October 2018 - 07:00 AM

Hey folks!

Got some LEGO related news. While it may not be TLG related, I was notified by email that BrickForge will be closing in the next couple of months. After 13 years of business, it appears as though we will be losing yet another vendor.

So pour one out, press F to pay respects, say your last words, and buy up anything that you want that's left!

Nightstalker's Guide to Army Building

26 September 2018 - 02:10 PM

If you're reading this then you must have some general interest in making awesome armies with LEGO. Alternatively, you're curious on how I do this. Well, it doesn't matter why you're here, I'm going to go into this! More importantly, I will literally be using this topic to showcase building my next army. That's right! Rather than wait for the final reveal, which I typically do, I'm going to walk through my process and thoughts as I build my next army.

Let's get into this!

For starters, what the heck is an army?

According to the Webster, it is an organized military force equipped for fighting on land.

"Duh, Nick, we already know that!" Of course you know that! I specifically want to highlight the whole, "organized military force," bit of it. Now, a lot of times when people want to put together a LEGO army, the first thing they think of is this:

This is a massive clone army. People are taken in by the sheer number of minifigs and set that as their primary goal. That's fine; shoot for the stars! However, acquiring that many minifigs can be a daunting task. More importantly, the average LEGO enthusiast, you don't have the resources to do so! That's 100% fine! Why? Because an army doesn't need to consist of massive troop numbers. Truth be told, for MOC'ing purposes, most people typically end up using 30-35 minifigs. Others might have specialized groups that are roughly a size of 10. Of course, some go for smaller numbers. In the end, it doesn't quite matter; they just need to be an organized military force. I'll touch on the whole "organized" thing a bit later.

Now, before you even consider building an army, the following questions need to be answered:

1) Where is your army from?

- Everyone has a home, even if it's the road.

2) Who's leading this army?

- Are they a King, a Queen, Emperor, or is this a motley group of militia led by a village elder?

3) Under what banner/colors do they unite?

- All armies need some form of recognition! Maybe it's an emblem that exists, maybe it's the colors, perhaps it's the type of weaponry they use.

These three questions should give you a solid foundation for starting your army. I should mention that at this stage of planning, you probably won't have any minifigs assembled yet. That's okay! You shouldn't have any minifigs built, or if you do have any, they should be at very low numbers.

"Can you show us an example?" Sure thing! Without further ado, let me introduce the next army I'll be building!

The next army is *drum roll please* ...

The Army of Bara-Gol (Orcs).

1) The orcs are from the lovely little land of Altrairia (left side of the map).

2) Warchief Gromack Urgol

3) They unite specifically under the following emblem:

And there ya go! The first couple of questions answered! From here, I'll be able to build off of this and eventually create a complex faction!

Anyways, that's all for now! Next time, I'll talk about the, "The Number Game," which will fully delve into army sizes and divisions.

Hope you enjoyed, and have an awesome day!

Review: BrickFair Virginia 2018 - Featuring Cool Swag!

06 August 2018 - 11:15 AM

Hello once again folks!

BrickFair Virginia 2018 is officially over! And man, was it a blast! Apart from displaying a build with some assistance of the SSLF forums, this year was full of great things!

So, for starters:

I received a visit from both Admins (2nd time we've met)! If you ever get the chance to meet Justin and Maegan, do so! They're both really awesome people! Thanks for paying me a visit, and I hope you both enjoy the minifigs!

That aside, here are some highlights from this year!

These are just some of the pictures of things that made me go "WOW". You can see the rest of the album here:

Please note that pictures of my build will be posted in the topic located here:

With that done, time to cover some neat swag!

First off, my badge. It has officially grown to the point where I need a frame to contain it.

BrickWarriors Arabian Scimitar and Head Cover

- Like all other BW items, these are made very well! This offers up a new curved sword and headgear for making some fierce, desert warriors. I'd like to eventually see the head cover in Tan and Brown, but as of now these are some solid items to add to the line up.

BrickWarriors Busker Hat and Trumpet Flags

- Bards rejoice! This stylish hat was made just for you! It was available in dark red and blue and is a nice addition to the musical specialists. I rather like its look and it definitely adds more to an area that hasn't really been covered by TLG.

BrickWarriors Paladin Sword, Paladin Armor, and Paladin Helmet

- So I might have gone overboard with this, but this is going to easily become my favorite armor set. Arched pauldrons on a clean torso and a very nice helmet (kinda looks elven) and the very clean sword easily make this a great addition to the fantasy line up. It even comes with a stud on the back for placing additional accessories or weaponry.

BrickWarriors Paladin Shield, Conquistador Helmet, and Dwarven Sword

- Oh, I forgot to mention the really awesome shield design for the Paladin Set! This shield will make tanking blows even easier. For those into pirates, you'll notice the nice Conquistador helmet. It's more detailed than TLGs but also bigger. It also goes along well with the Paladin torso. Last in this picture is the Dwarven Sword. I'm going to start by saying that I shouldn't actually have this piece. It was accidentally in the Paladin Sword pile, and I completely wasn't paying attention to it when I picked it up. That being said, this prompted one of my buds to do some research:

What we found was a full set of Dwarven Accessories including an Axe, Sword, Hammer, and Shield. So yes, more custom items will be coming for Dwarves!

So, when are these coming out?

Here's a rough time line based off of a conversation with Merrie (writes BW's blogs).
Paladin Accessories are roughly 3-4 months out.
Busker Accessories are probably 6-7 months out.
Dwarf Accessories currently have no release date.
That being said, these items are more than likely available from the Rewards Exclusive Pack (200 BW points). If you have the points, make sure to request a Medieval/Fantasy pack.
Overall, BFVA2018 was a blast! It gives me an even greater reason to look forward to BFVA2019!
Thanks for viewing, and hope to see you next year!

Custom Miniatures!

07 May 2018 - 11:34 AM

I know I have absolutely no reason to be posting in the art section! But here me out on this one, because it's cool!

Among the many things on SSLF that I see are ads. We all hate 'em, especially me! However, on a random whim I decided to investigate one of them. That one link was for Hero Forge, a site where you can design your own miniatures. I played around with it for a bit, because it's a neat little site.

Then I showed my bro (who will be referred to as AfroMan)...

Let's just say, he took off with this and is loving this! It has given him a fun little hobby, and honestly, I rather like his work! So I figure, why not show you all, and hear some feedback!

While I won't give away who these people are or the stories behind them, I will say that are from a work of his own creation.

So without further ado, here they are!

Brickfair Virginia 2018: A Day at the Arena

27 March 2018 - 12:10 PM

Alrighty ladies and gents of SSLF, it's that time again!

Every year I attend BFVA and generally show off something SSLF related (except last year). This year, I feel the need to bring us all together for a little bit of a bloodbath. That bloodbath being the arena! However, as with all SSLF related builds, I need you to make this build what it is!

So, how can YOU, the great folks of SSLF, help me? Glad you asked! Here's what I'm going to need:

1) Spectators (Everyone)

- What is an arena battle without a crowd of spectators? For every forum member, I will take up to a maximum of five different spectators. Just build a minifig (or five), and post a pic in this topic. If you don't have the parts, feel free to head on over to bricklink.com, find some pieces and give me a list. If your minifig requires decals, please just give me a description so I have something to request from Scorp. Given that this build will be 48x144, I'm going to need a lot of figs! If your figure is someone special, please feel free to include the following:

- Name (including title)

- Piece list or picture

Current Spectators

1. Nobleman Dalton - (Dalton Westmoore)

2. Nox - (Maverick-Werewolf)

3. Caiden - (Maverick-Werewolf)

4. Perky - (Burger Warrior)

5. Agnar - (Sephsekla)

6. Dargnin - (Sephsekla)

7. Yel - (Sephsekla)

- Okay folks, this is going to be a tad different than spectators. For starters, as to avoid any issues of bad character representation, all combatants will be on the same team. So, if you were hoping to slay another member's minifig, you're out of luck there. The other thing to note is that I will only be accepting a total of 15 10 combatants (technically 13 8, because of Admin reserved spots). So here's what I need from you guys:

- Name (including title)

- Crest: This is an emblem that will appear on a triangular shield. Feel free to use an already existing emblem, or come up with your own! Again, if it is custom, I'll just make a decal request!

- Picture or piece list

Current Combatants

1. Hawkin - (Saber-Scorpion) - Ellipsis Crest

2. Tom Drake - (Maverick-Werewolf) - Family Crest

3. Amanon - (Dalton Westmoore) - Amanon Alliance Crest

4. Sigmar Oathbreaker - (Lord_Capulet) - Broken Hammer Crest

5. Garandros - (Sephsekla) - ???

6. Althenia - (Nightstalker) - Twin Axe Crest

7. Rynne - (Thrawnie) - ???

8. The Black Knight - (Mystery Entry) - Afro Crest

9. Edorin Gwyn - (Nightstalker) - Lion Knight Crest

10. Kain Talon - (Nightstalker) - Black Lance Crest

- In the event of receiving more than 15 10 combatants, I'll sort it out by rolling a d20 for each spot. Feel free to use gray market items as well! If you are using a character that I've already made for you, just let me know!

3) VIPs (Mods)

- Among the many spectators, there will be very important people. This follows the same rules as the spectators, with the exception that I'm limiting it to one person per Mod. Just need a name and picture/parts list.

Current Mods

1. Inquisitor Marcus Capulet - (Lord Capulet)

4) Honored Guest (Admins)

- As always, our Admins will have a specific spot designed for them. At the current moment for Scorp, I was thinking of using a variant of King Scorp (from SYWBAA) and an entourage of Scorpion Guard. For Mav, well, I have my Wolf Queen Mav fig and an entourage of werewolf guards that will be supplied. If these sound good, just let me know, if not, just tell me what you want!

Current Admins

1. King Scorpion - (Saber-Scorpion)

2. Wolf Queen Mav - (Maverick-Werewolf)

5) Out of Place Minifigs (Everyone)

- For this category, just leave a minifig that sure as heck shouldn't be in a fantasy setting, or is just plain out of place. Given the high amount of figs I want to have here, I have room for some cameos. The number I use ultimately depends on how easy it is to sneak them in.

That's it for now! If you guys have more questions, feel free to ask! If not, then get building!

- Nick
