Could we potentially move give the blog space a bit more size, vertically speaking? It might encourage further use beyond the two people who currently blog.

I agree, they could be utilized much more. But generally speaking there isn't as many people online at the moment, but I supect that is because of the summer vacation. Maybe once it's over people will start flooding back, and do as you say and use the blog system in place of updates? Or maybe I am completely wrong.
